Augustus Benjaman Brodt
b. July 1811, d. 22 January 1905, #22113

Birth* July 1811 Augustus Benjaman was born in July 1811 at Prussia.1
Marriage* Augustus Benjaman Brodt married Caroline Clara Henriette (?) in Germany.
Immigrat2* 1848 The information that Augustus gave for the 1900 census is that he entered this county in 1848 and that he is a naturalized citizen..1
research 1850 Find at Langenholhausen, Lippe Dettmold, Germany, 1850 Since son Robert was born in Germany in 1849 this family had to have come to this county AFTER 1849. If Augustus Frederick Broad was this man's son and Augustus entered this county at the age of 12 it can be assumed that this man entered at the same time, as it is not likely that the younger Augustus would have come alone at the age of 12. That would have been about 1850.2
research 1850 Find 1850 Augustus Frederick claims to be from Langenholhausen, Lippe, Germany. Are these two from there also?2
research* 1850 Find 1850 If AUGUSTUS FREDERICK BROAD was the son of Augustus Benjamin and Caroline Brodt, and Augustus Frederick is said to have entered this county at the age of 12 it can be assumed that he came with his parents and if these are his parents they must have come about 1850.
research 1860 Find 1860 There is also a Frederick Broad in Burlington, Iowa who may be too young See N23-17 on the 1860 census.

Wife Caroline is 42, born in Prussia. Children are Bertha, 15 and Robert 11, both born in Prussia. Since Robert, who is 11 years old was born in Prussia, they must still have been in Germany in 1849.3

HYPER* HYPERLINK this file: August and Caroline tombstone. These stones sit along the edge of the cemetery under some cedar trees. A lot of the old cemeteries had cedar trees planted in them. The Cedar grows very easily here. The early settlers would dig them up and replant in their yards and around buildings for wind protection. C:\book\linkedpix\brodt tomestone.11

research* Find 1874 Atlas Index of Landowners gives the following for BRODT:
Brodt, A.           Green Bay Township
Brodt, A.           Washington Township
Brodt, August          Green Bay Township We are assuming that all these pieces of property were owned by Augustus Brodt.5

!AInfoNew Note from Janet Hausch:
Stopped by a house overlooking the Green Bay bottoms to see if by chance it was August Brodt's home since it was on the map of 1874. Sure enough the man got out his abstract, August bought 59 1/2 acres for $2,000 and another 36 acres for $5,000 on Sept 23, 1853. Plus 1 acre which the barns sat on. The cemetery is known as the Claypoole Cemetery since that was the person August bought the property from. Claypoole bought it from the U.S. Government. This land was just being settled at that time.11
HYPER HYPERLINK this file: This is the view from the side of the house, it was built on the top of a ridge which runs along this vast bottom ground. At one time August owned about 450 acres either in the bottom or on the ridge. Most of it was in the bottom lands. Even today this is very fertile farming. The tree is a very old oak tree, I would like to think it was there when August lived there. C:\book\linked pix\Brodt green bay and Tree in yard.11
