Jersey. as It appears that James is the householder tho' he is not
listed first, but he does own the property. He is 68 years old and born
in New Jersey, employed as a fisherman. Son-in-law, John Reed is 48, a
farmer with NO land but $350 of personal property, born in New Jersey. Wife of John Reed is Sarah, 38 who is the daughter of James Hannold.
Sarah and John have two children: Mary E 8 and Charles 6, both born in
New Jersey. There are also two servants living in this household.
James' son Benjamin does not live too far away.3 |

census information is somewhat convoluted as Sarah Hannold Reed is
given as mother and she is the mother-in-law of Benjamin not his mother.
Sarah is 49, a widow, employed as a nurse. Benjamin Herven or Ewen is
25, not employed. His wife is Mary, 19. Mary is the daughter of Sarah
Hannold Reed. Sarah's son, Charles Reed is 16 and is given as brother
when he is truly the brother-in-law of the householder. In addition,
there is a baby, Charles Herven or Ewen who is 9/12 years old,
therefore born ca Oct 1879. He is given as step-son. Likely the step
son of Mary and NOT the stepson of Benjamin. If Mary and Benjamin were
married in 1877 as indicated by at least one source, then how could a
child less than a year old be the step son of Mary??? It is possible
that Mary and Benjamin were married later than the 1877 date and this
child was the child of Benjamin's first wife, who we do not know.4 |
