On 2 July 1635 Adam 39 years old, a tailor and his
wife Sarah, 31 years old with 5 children: Jo: 14; Adam 12;
Jonathan 9 Elizabeth 6 and Mary 4 boarded the ship Defense at
London England bound for the colonies. The Mary who is 4 years old, is
said to be actually Mary Lott, daughter of Sarah by her first husband.3 |

| 3 July 1635 | His passage stated that he came from Cambridge. He
evidently belonged to the nearby parish of Saffron Walcen, Co. Essex,
England. Likely, this should read Saffron Walden, England. He first
came to Boston, then lived in Hingham, Massachusetts and finally in
about 1638 moved to Rhode Island.4 |

| 1636 | They had at least 3 children all of whom are
purported to have been born in Rhode Island. Jacob, who was born about
1636 (Austin says 1633 but that can not be correct as they were not
married until 1635 and came to the colonies is 1635 and Jacob was NOT
with them). He is said to have died about 15 Nov 1711. Gershom and
Eleazer or Eleazah about whom little is known.2 |

| 25 May 1636 | On 25 May 1636, he was listed as free man at
Roxbury, Mass. He and his wife were members of First Church at Roxbury.
He soon moved to Hingham where he had a grant of land.5 |

| 23 June 1636 | In 1636, at Portsmouth, he and others were
admitted inhabitants of the island of Aquidneck, having submitted
themselves to the government that is, or shall be, established. On 23
June 1638, he had a grant of land on the west side of the spring. On 6
Sept. 1638, the Mass. authorities directed the constable of Hingham to
attach him and bring him before the Governor. But the order came too
late for he had relocated out of their jurisdiction.5 |

| 1638 | Portsmouth was settled in 1638 as the second
settlement in the area. With Anne Hutchinson as leader of the
settlement, Portsmouth became the first community founded in the New
World by a woman. Its Indian name was Pocasset, and on May 12, 1649,
the name of Portsmouth was confirmed. And as original settlement,
Portsmouth became part of the original group of settlements which
united to form the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.6 |

On 27 May 1644, he was granted an addition to his lot. On 30 Sept.1653, he deeded son Adam 12 acres. In 1655, he was a freeman.5 |
