| Father | **Joseph Havens b. 1753, d. 1 April 1833 | |
| Mother | **Martha Bennett b. 7 April 1755, d. 9 October 1845 |
| Birth | 16 June 1788 | William B[ennet] was born on 16 June 1788 at Argyll, Washington county, New York.3,4 We do not know that his middle name was Bennett. Just a wild guess. |
||
| 16 June 1789 | William was born on 16 June 1789 at Steuben county, NY or MA. On 1880 census daughter, Jane Abigail, says that her father was born in NY. The handwritten sheets done by Edith Morin with input from Mary Fowler Norman and possibly, Effie Hannold Morin, indicate that he was born in Steuben county, NY. This area may not have been Steuben county in 1789. On the 1850 census he claims to have been born in Massachusetts, yet on the 1860 census he says that he was born in New York. Gravestone gives the year as 1789. 'Havens Harbor' gives birth date as 1790/91. May have been born in Argyle, Washington, NY as it appears his parents lived there for a while. Lorraine Healton in HH 5:3 says born in MA. Middle initial may not be "B". On the death record of daughter Jane Abigail he is listed as William "H". Bennett is a possibility as his mother was Martha Bennett.5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13 | |||
| On the 1880 census of son Isaac, Isaac says that his father was born in New York.14 |

| 1804 | In 1804 there was a flu epidemic in the Steuben
county area of New York of sufficient proportions to make the history
books of that area.16 |
|||
| Marriage | circa 1807 | William B[ennet] Havens married Hannah M Hale, daughter of possibly John Hale and Mother Hale (?),
circa 1807 in poss. NY. This marriage date is only a guess from the
date of the birth of their oldest known child. Hannah would have only
been about 15 or 16 years old if the birth date of 1791-92 is correct. |
||
| Cen1810 | 1810 | Joseph Havens
appears on the 1810 census in Sodus township, Ontario, New York per
information from HH. Sodus is now in Wayne county and is only a few
miles from the Lake Ontario shore, and Lyons was formed from Sodus.
Joseph and son Stephen are living adjacently and two houses away is
another son William. So in Joseph Havens' Revolutionary War file at the
National Archives is this statement: "March 4, 1830, Served in
Capt.......resides in Cohocton, Steuben county - fifteen previous
thereto resided in Lyons, Wayne county" He hadn't actually moved
during that time, only the County and township names and lines had been
altered.17,18,19 |

| 1815 | Joseph Blivens was sent by the agent of the land
office in Bath, in 1794, to build a house to be used as a tavern for
the accomodation of settlers on Pulteney estate, at the twenty-two mile
tree. He came and built the house on the farm owned by the late George
Gardner at the junction of the road up the Cohocton with the road
leading from Naples to Dansville. Some four years after he married the
Hooker girl and sold out the twenty-two mile tree, and built what was
known in those days as a double log tavern where the O. Wetmore store
and dwelling now stands, which was the first house built in North
Cohocton. After roads were laid out through that section it was called
Bivens Corners for some years. It is said he sold out to William Havens, who kept the tavern for a while. He and his brother Joseph came
here in an early day. Joseph built a large two-story farme building
where the Eel Pot road forks off from the Naples road, and kept tavern
there for a number of years. He was not a little surprised on awakening
one morning to find a dozen Inidans stretched on the floor before the
fire, who had taken posssession whle he slept. William Havens
sold out the corner to Samuel Hartwell in 1815." GAZETEER OF STEUBEN
