research Find My gggrandfather Thomas Bennett was born 1/11/1778 (Family records) in New Hampshire (1850 census). On 10/1/1809 he married Patty Stevens in Washington NH (NH VRs). They moved to NY state ca. 1810, together with Patty's Stevens family.

Martha (Patty) Stevens was the dtr. of Jesse Stevens and Martha Seaton, b. 1/12/1787, prob. NH. Jesse was the son of Isaac and Mary (Barker) Stevens. Martha Seaton was the gdaughter of John Seaton and of Andrew Seaton, brothers who came from Scotland via Ireland ca. 1729.

     After the Rev. the name Charlotte Co. New York was changed to Washington Co. in 1784. In 1788 Argyle was officially recognized by the state. VT was admitted as a state in 1791. Also in 1791 the town's of Cambridge and Easton were added to Washington Co. In 1803 Greenwich was set off as a separate town. P. 51
     
     The province of NY was divided in counties in 1683. All the state north of Albany was Albany Co. In 1772 Charlotte Co. was set apart from Albany. In 1784 Charlotte changed to Washington Co. and boundries redefined. 1788 East town of Saratoga district became Easton. 1791 Easton and Cambridge were added to Washington Co.
     
     Earliest settlers in the area were the DeRidder's from Holland. Other settlers began coming in at the close of the French and Indian War. Three cultural groups, Holland Dutch, Quakers and the Rhode Island Baptist near Greenwich. (north east section) These groups did not easily merge. Dutch because of the language and the Quakers and Baptist were at the time closed communion sects.3
