The Young Family

The following is a letter written to Kate Hobson from her mother Catherine Young.
Auckland
Dec. 19th, 1873
My dear Kate as it is so near Christmas and a steamer is sailing tomorrow morning I could not let the opportunity slip to let you know we are all well, and I may not be spared another Christmas nor perhaps another opportunity as you know my dear child I am getting very hold I was 66 last September. O how I should like to have seen you all once more, if it was not such a long voige I would shurly come to see you all once more and I am shure you will be suprised to hear that I have been to Melbourne to see the girls and they are all well. It is 18 years sins I last saw them of course they are very much altered in that time. Eliza is a widow. Pender has been dead this 8 months he drank his self to death his father died only one month before him. She did not know me and I talked to her a long time at last I said Eliza do you not know me and she said is it you, Ma, but Grace and Thomas knew me directly I went in they were very pleased to see me and wanted me to stay till after Christmas but I am sorry I did not stay another month. All the children was so pleased to see me and Jinney and Kate Anderson was all the time talking about you and Richard and Emeline and Mr. Owens and they would so like to see you all. They are such nice girls and very pretty behaved they could not do too much for me while I was there. I only came home last month. Old Mr. Pender has left all his money to Eliza's boys but I am afraid they will not do much good with it. The eldest boy Mikle Lord is one of the finest looking young men I ever saw and Kate Pender is a nice looking girl. Eliza has nothing left to her only what is allowed for the keep of the younger children. The old man left seventy five thousand pounds and all to the Pender boys. I went to see George he lives a long way in the country in Sydney he is very stout quite as fat as your father your poor father has been dead 7 years next February. So you see my dear Kate how time flies.
All sends their love to Richard and the children. It is eleven o'clock. God bless you all.
from your affectionate mother
C. Young
