The Children of George Carsten Hollings.
The children grew up and one by one left home, George Albert married Maud Lilian Bremer at Walthamstow Parish Church, February 5th 1916. Sarah Ethel appeared to be working as an housekeeper in St Pancras London about this time and although we will never know for sure, she apparently met and married John Arthur Gowing sometime during the period 1915-1919 and Donald Jack Gowing was born August 1920. John Arthur Gowing never knew his son and sometime during the next few years Sarah Ethel returned home alone. In 1918 Florence Gertrude married Thomas Copeland, and emigrated to America, it was also the year Daisy Ivy, just eighteen, died of heart disease. In 1923 Violet May married John Crossland Kaye in Darton, Yorkshire, a long way from her home in Walthamstow, London. That left Raymond Leslie, born in 1910. Raymond suffered through his younger years with polio, resulting in a curved back as he grew older. He left home with Sarah Ethel and her son Donald Jack sometime in 1928/9. Sarah Ethel's Mother Sarah Jemimah had died in 1922, and her father George Carsten married again in 1928, to Maud Edith Barber a 49 year old lady who lived on the other side of Walthamstow, bordering ChingfordThe Marriage Certificate of George Albert Hollings of 1916 gives his address as 23 Exeter Road, Walthamstow. A small terraced house in the heart of the town off just Hoe Street. This was to be the last address of George Carsten, in 1938, ten years after his second marriage he died age 79. The last years of his life saw his house turned over to lodgers, a practice his wife continued after his death, maybe the extra income was necessary.
George Albert and Maud Lilian had two children, both girls, Violet Lilian marred Leonard Brabant, a brief marriage that ended in divorce and Gladys Caroline Joan married Ronald Robert Clark in Chingford and they in turn had two children Trevor and Christine, both of whom are married and have children of their own. George Albert died in 1972 in Chingford.
After leaving home in 1928/9 Sarah Ethel had a succession of housekeeping jobs but eventually moved north to Chingford Essex. More information about Sarah and her son can be found hereFlorence Gertrude we know little about. We know she married and left for America and had children but no more than that. Violet May is unusual in that she married in Yorkshire. How she came to be in Yorkshire we do not know. She married in 1923, five years after the end of the First World War, whether or not that has a bearing on it we may never know. We do know however that she also had children but that is it.
Raymond Leslie never married, he lived with his sister at various addresses along with her son Donald Jack until Donald married Winifred May Deacon in 1940. Raymond Leslie died in 1962, age 52, whilst living with his sister at Springfield road, Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire. He was buried at Bury Green Cemetery in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. The story of Sarah Ethel and her son Donald is continued here.
