I would like to thank all my cousins--either by actual relation or by the genealogy hobby--who have helped make this Egnor/Agner page possible:
Pat Adkins, Patsy Adkins, Sharon Agner, Robert Agner Jr., Bill Agnor, Linda Belcher, Emma Jean Bias, Bill Edwards, Barbie Egnor, Clark Egnor, Dick Gould, Tony Gould, Sandy Dickens Graley, Charles F. Kerchner Jr., Karilyn Kuntsbeck, Illyce MacDonald, Ken Morris, Peg Place, Priscilla Reinowski, Angela Ruley, Carolyn Wyld Egnor Saul, Roberta Stanulewich Schwartz, Carol Setliff, Rudy Thut, and others.
Much of the information I have collected in my database is really their work, and I am forever grateful for their time, their hard work, and their willingness to share.
The Egnor surname is an uncommon one. There are
many variants to the name (we've counted over 50!), including:
Egner, Egener, Eigner, Eignor, Eygner, Eygnor, Aigner, Agner, Agnor, Aegender,
Aegener, Agener, Igender, Eigender, Eigenter, etc.
Before the 1800s, there are three known lines:
There may have been other lines, as well, since we have
a few lines that we cannot connect to these three lines--or perhaps we
just haven't found the proof on how they connect.
Meaning of the name EGNER
I have seen two suggestions:
1) Per a German student (with the surname Egner), the name Egner is derived from the German word "Ebne" which means "one who lives on a plateau" and the surname originiated in a southern German town called Konstanz during the 9th century.
2) Per Elsdon Smith's book New Dictionary of American Family Names, the name EIGNER is a Germanic name meaning "the peasant with a free hold, that is, land on which he did not pay rent." In this case the name is said to have derived from the German word "eigen," which refers to "one's own."
Meaning of the name AEGENDER / AGNER: unknown at this time.
My dad comes from the Lincoln County branch of the Egnors, which looks like it comes from the Johannes Aegender branch, through his grandson John Agner who settled in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Johannes Aegender and his wife Margarita came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania September 21 1731, aboard the ship "Britannia" sailing from Rotterdam, Holland by way of Cowes, England. Arriving on the ship were: Johannes Eigenter age 33 and Margarita, and their children Katherina, age 12; Anna Kreta, age 5; Henriks, age 10; Ludwig, age 3; Magdelena, age 2; Dorothia, age 6.
Johannes Aegender and one son a (Henry) nd at least two daugthers went to Rowan County, NC and founded that Agner branch. Johannes' other son (Ludwig) went to Maryland and from there the line went to Ohio and the Virginias.
All Lincoln County Egnors can be traced back to Archibald Egnor (5th generation from Johannes), who was born in Virginia in 1811. He married three times and had 8 children from one marriage and one child from another. I now have over 1000 descendents of Archibald and his wives in my database--there are many more. If you see a connection, please E-mail me! I'd love to include your line, cousin!
