...Elias Johnson came in the fall of 1833, settled near Summersville, and there raised a large family. He had served, for a short time, in the war of 1812. He taught several of the early schools, was a well-respected member of society, and died in 1865 at a ripe old age...
...In 1834, Elias Johnson taught a school in the little cabin which Samuel Hyde built during the summer of 1832. A schoolhouse was soon after erected on the farm of Elias Johnson by the pioneers in the vicinity of Summersville. Elias and John Johnson taught here for a few years, until the schoolhouse burned. One was then built west of Bokes Creek and one at Summersville...

ELIAS JOHNSON... departed this earth on New Year's eve 1864 at the age of 70 years, 5 months and 9 days. Elias was born the son of Anne (Alexander) and Abel Johnson on July 22, 1794 in Brooke County, West Virginia.
Elias married Eliza Hyde, daughter of Elizabeth and Samuel Hyde on March 23, 1819 in York, Union, Ohio.
Elias and Eliza were the parents of eight children: Joseph (Catherine Butterfield), Samuel (Catherine Watters), Mary (Elias Robertson), Elias (Julia Ann Taylor), Elizabeth (Andrew Gandy), Martha Louise (Alexander Cameron), and Margaret (Charles Bird).
Elias was survived by his wife and children although son Joseph died the following day, January 1, 1865 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee serving as a soldier in the Ohio Volunteers during the Civil War. Daughter Rebecca E. (Joseph Jefferson Boyd) preceded him in death on January 1, 1863.
NOTE: Union County, Ohio did not record deaths before 1867.
