Lewis Esq was a Magistrate authorised to administer Oaths and take
acknowledgements, &c. in the State of Pennsylvania at the above date
and that his name subscribed to the foregoing certificate &c. appears

subscribed my name and quality as Prothonotary of Cambria County at Ebensburg
this fifth day of January 1836.

I Rich. Lewis a Justice of the Peace in & for Cambria
County in the State of Pennsylvania do hereby certify that I am well acquainted
with Godfrey Settlemyer of this County and that he is reputed &
generally believed to have been a Soldier of the Pennsylvania line in the
Revolutionary War, and that he is the same man who is now drawing a pension or
pay from the United states on account of his services.

Among the Records of the Court of Common Pleas of Cambria County aforesaid it
appears as follows (to wit) On the twenty ninth day of March AD one thousand Eight hundred
& thirty. Personally appeared in open Court of Common pleas of Cambria
County in said district (being a court of Record & proceeding according to
the Common Law with a Jurisdiction unlimited in point of amount, having a seal
and keeping a Record of their proceedings) Godfrey Settlemoyer aged
seventy seven years who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on his oath
make the following declaration to obtain the provision made by the acts of
Congress of the 18th of March 1818 and the first of May 1820. That he the said
Godfrey Settlemoyer enlisted for the term of eighteen months in the
Company commanded by Capt. Jacob Bower and was assigned joined or
attached to Captain Seely's company in the second Regiment under General
Anthony Wayne - that he marched to South Carolina and about the
expiration of his term returned to Lancaster in Pennsylvania, where he enlisted
for during the war, and served out the term of his Enlistment and received a
discharge at Philadelphia which discharge has since been destroyed by fire. That
he has no evidence now in his power of his said services except the deposition
of Adam Sonday herewith Exhibited and the deposition of William Levingston
also herewith Exhibited; and in pursuance of the act of the 1st May 1820 I
Godfrey Settlemoyer do swear that I was a resident citizen of the United
States on the 18th of March one thousand eight hundred and eighteen, and that I
have not since that time by gift, sale or in any Manner Disposed of my property
or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself
within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled "An act to provide for
certain persons engaged in the land and navel Service of the United States in
the Revolutionary War" aforesaid on the 18th day of March one thousand
eight hundred and Eighteen, and that I have not nor has any person in trust for
me any property or Securities, contracts or debts to Me, nor have I any income
other than what is contained in the Schedule hereto annexed and by me
Subscribed. (p. 112) of old age and disability I am now unable to work. I do not own
any Land but I have settled on a tract and can not pay for it. I have four sons
and three daughters. I live with my son George and two of my Daughters. My son
George works the ground for the support of my family. And now to wit the 29th day of March A D 1830 Read and the Court approved of
the Same and decree that the property contained in the Schedule is worth one
hundred and Sixty four Dollars and fifty cents. Cambria County Ss.

Washington, D. C., Oct. 27, 1920 In reply to your request
of _____________, received ___________ for a statement of the military history
of Godfrey Settlemyer, Settlemeyer or Settlemoyer, a soldier of the
REVOLUTIONARY WAR, you will find below the desired information as contained in
his (or his widow's) application for pension on file in the Bureau. S.46343 Respectfully, Commissioner. Note: The Pennsylvania Archives, Fifth Series, Vol. 2
state that Godfrey Settlemire was in Col. Craig's detachment, Lusk's
Company in 1781 and in the 2nd Regiment, Bicker's Company in 1782; that
he deserted on 25 Oct 1781; and that he served in both the 2nd and 3rd
Pennsylvania Continental Lines.

of my knowledge and belief, the said I did enlist in Aug
1781 for the term of during the war and served in the Regiment, No. Second
under the command of Colonel Humpton, Major Hamilton, & Captains Powers,
Seely & Stotesbury of the Pennsylvania line, and that he I
continued in the service until the War ended. I further declare that I
have never received a warrant for the bounty land promised to said
me on the part of the United States; nor do I believe that he
ever received it, or transferred his my
claim to it in any manner whatsoever: Therefore Know all Men by these
Presents, That I Godfrey Settlemyer aforesaid do hereby
constitute and appoint Vespasian Ellis of Accomack,
Virginia, to be my true and lawful Attorney for me and in mt name to demand and
receive from the Secretary of War of the United States; a warrant for the
quantity of land due to me as aforesaid; and my said attorney is hereby
authorised and empowered to constitute and appoint one or more substitutes or
attorneys under him for the special purposes above expressed. Witness my hand
and seal this fifth day of January 1836.
