Fifth Generation

George Peter Settlemire was born 22 Dec 1809 to Martin Settlemire and Mary Killian; he died 21 Oct 1897. He married 1st on 5 Aug 1834 in Lincoln Co NC Hannah S. Hahn, who was born 24 Mar 1813 to Frederick and Elizabeth Hahn or Hawn and died in 1852. Frederick and Elizabeth had 10 children, according to birth and baptismal records of the Zion Lutheran Church (New South Fork Church), south of Hickory in Catawba Co NC. Hannah was the third child born. The names and birth dates of the children are of use in verifying marriage relationships:

	Margaret	7 Jan 1809	Barbara 14 Jun 1819
	Moses 25 Apr 1811	Abner 28 Oct 1821
	Hannah 24 Mar 1813	Delila A.	29 Jun 1824
	Johannes 2 Apr 1815	Dinah Melvina	21 Feb 1827
	Sarah 23 Feb 1817	Stephen 19 Sep 1829

There were three George Settlemires born in the same general time period, so it was difficult to learn who married whom. In his Civil War Veterans’ Questionnaire, submitted to the state of Tennessee, Daniel Sylvanius Settlemyre stated that his parents were George Peter Settlemyre and Hannah Hawes. She was the daughter of Frederick Hawes. George Settlemire and Hannah Hawn were married 5 Aug 1834 In Lincoln (later Catawba) Co NC.

Moses Hawn made a will in 1882 in which he left property to his four sisters, including Hannah Settlemire. She was apparently living then. By the time of the final settlement on 19 May 1887, three sisters received their full shares, but Hannah’s share went to six of George Peter’s children. Three others were omitted. Apparently Hannah had died by 1887.

Hannah and Moses’ sister Barbara Hawn made a will in 1905 in which she left property to "the heirs of my sister Hannah Settlemyre, wife of George Settlemyre, deceased." The term "deceased" apparently referred to Hannah, although both George and Hannah were dead by then. The final account in the estate identifies the Hanna Settlemyre heirs as: Allen Settlemyre, John Settlemyre, Daniel Settlemyre, Angeline Sigman, and David Settlemyre’s heirs, who were Jacob Settlemyre, Mrs. Ada Settlemyre. and Mrs. H. L. Cline. This list omitted William Henry Settlemyre, G. W. Settlemyre, and the Alice Settlemyre Holder heirs.

Both George P. and Anna S. Settlemyre are buried in the old St. Paul’s Church near Hickory, NC. His stone gives his date of birth as 22 Dec 1809 and date of death as 21 Oct 1897. Her dates are 17 Dec 1819 and 18 Oct 1895. (These dates are according to a book about the St. Paul’s Cemetery. The birth date is totally out of line with the baptismal record.) If this is Hannah Hawn Settlemyre, then why did her children receive her distributive share of the Moses Hawn estate in 1887?

Vol. 3, No. 1 of Catawba Cousins (July 1988) gives entries from John Fleming Williamson’s account book. One of those entries was dated 10 Feb 1852 for George Settlemyer for a coffin for his wife, amounting to $4.00. The account was settled by cash on 9 Mar 1852. George was appointed guardian of his minor children, according to the Index to Guardians, Administrators and Executors for Catawba Co NC. (The book referred to in the Index is not available in the NC Archives for inspection.)

At the Oct 1860 term of court, George reported that as guardian of Allen and David Settlemire he held $34.00 due them as of January 1859. (Catawba Co NC Inventories and Sales of Estates, Vol. 1, 1843-1862, p. 722) A committee appointed to settle the estate of his minor heirs reported in July 1862 that George hand on hand $36 to pay to his minor children. (Catawba Co NC Inventories and Sales of Estates, Vol. 2, 1862-1868, p. 10)

One George Settlemyre married Anna Bost on 27 Mar 1855; he was said to be the George Settlemyre who in the 1860 census had living in his household one Jane Bost, age 10. That was George P., with his wife Anna. The children listed with them are the children of George Peter and Hannah Hawn Settlemyre.

I had believed that his first cousin, George S. Settlemire of Caldwell Co NC, had married Anna Bost, but the evidence finally showed otherwise. Hannah Hawn Settlemire was the mother of six children, as indicated by the estate records of both Moses and Barbara Hawn. Hannah must have died between the time of the 1850 Catawba Co NC census and 1855. (She apparently died in early 1852, as seen from the Williamson account book.) Then George Peter married Anna Bost, by whom he had three more children. This is the wife who was buried beside him in the Old St. Paul Church Cemetery near Newton.

George was listed as age 30-40 and Hannah was 20-30 in the 1840 Lincoln Co NC census; they also had one female 5-10 and two males under 5. The 1850 Catawba Co NC census gave George’s age as 43 and Hannah’s as 37. George farmed land valued at $400. Their children were Caroline. 15; Angeline, 14; Daniel, 12; John, 10; Allen, 8; and David, 4. In 1860 George’s age was 51 and his farm value was up to $1,500. Wife Ann (Bost) was 43 and their household consisted of Angeline, 23; Daniel, 21 and a house carpenter; John P., 20 and a wheelwright; Allen M., 14; David A., 12; William H., 4; G. W., 3; and Jane Bost, 10. The 1870 census located George in the Newton area. He was 60 and Anna was 48. Children in the home were Angeline Cline, 34; William, 14; George, 12; Alice, 10; Sidney (Cline), 3; and Jane Bost, 19. The 1880 census showed that George was 70 and Anna was 55; W. H., 23 and G. W., 21, were still at home.

Catawba Co NC court minutes for the period Dec 1843-Nov 1867 show that George was often serving either on the Grand Jury or a petty jury. In Apr 1859 he filed a $100 bond as guardian of his minor children with W. R. D. Bost as security. Again in Apr 1862 he filed a $75 bond, this time with brother Paul as security. In Jul 1864 George was appointed overseer of the road from the incorporation of Newton by Heldebrand’s Mill to Ann Bost’s.

George owned a 161-acre farm in the Newton area. He first listed for taxes an 83-acre tract adjoining Elias Bost in McHaffey’s District, Lincoln Co NC (the Clarks Creek area). This was the land he received from his father’s estate, which he listed in the 1837, 1839 and 1840 returns. Catawba Co NC records for 1857-1868 for the Newton area indicate that he owned 161 acres.

In the 1850 Agricultural Schedule, he listed his farm as 85 acres, with 45 acres cleared. He had 2 horses, 3 mules, 3 milk cows, 2 working oxen, 3 other cattle, 3 sheep, and 17 swine, all valued at $148. He had produced 45 bushels of wheat, 350 bushels of corn, 60 bushels of oats, 5 pounds of wool, 10 bushels of Irish potatoes, 8 bushels of sweet potatoes, 160 pounds of butter, 50 pounds of cheese, 15 pounds of flax (and 2 bushels of flax seed), 26 pounds of beeswax and honey, and $50 worth of homemade products.

By 1860 he had cleared 50 acres for farming, and his farm was valued at $1,500. He no longer had any mules, and he had disposed of 2 milk cows, his oxen, and one swine, but he had one more sheep. He increased his wheat production to 72 bushels and decreased his corn by 50 bushels. He nearly doubled his wool, to 8 pounds, and his potato harvest had increased to 25 bushels Irish and 20 bushels sweet potatoes. He had $20 worth of orchard products, 100 pounds of butter, 2 tons of hay, 12 pounds of flax (again with 2 bushels of seed), 6 pounds of beeswax, 60 pounds of honey, $60 worth of homemade products, and $40 worth of animals slaughtered.

Three of George’s sons volunteered for the Confederate war effort. Certainly this affected his ability to farm, just as many families, North and South, found normal life impossible with the nation at war. An idea of how bad the situation was may be gleaned from this entry in the Catawba County Court Minutes of Jan 1864:

It appearing to the satisfaction of the Court (a Majority of the Justices being present) from the testimony of E. P. Coulter, Jas. Bost, Geo. P. Shuford & G. M. Yoder who after being duly qualified according to law, that there will be a deficiency of Corn in said County to the amount of Three Thousand bushels & that unless a purchase can be made of a part of the tax in kind grain produced in this County, that many of the widows & wives of the Soldiers from this County will greatly suffer.

It is therefore ordered by the said Court now here present that M. L. McCorkle be appointed agent of the said Court to purchase from the Confederate States Three Thousand bushels of Corn for the Purpose as aforesaid.

It is further ordered by said Court that our said Agent be authorized to appoint Sub agents in said County in each Captains District for the Proper distribution & reception of any grain so purchased as aforesaid.

It is further ordered by the said Court that our said Agent is authorized to draw upon the County Commissioner D. B. Gaither or any other person having the funds in his hands appropriated as aforesaid either by receiving the same from said commissioner or giving orders upon him for said funds or so much thereof as will be necessary for the Purposes as aforesaid.

In Jan 1865 Gaither was ordered to buy 200 yards of domestic cloth for making corn sacks. McCorkle was ordered to buy corn at the rate of $10 per bushel in North Carolina Treasury notes.

George’s estate was administered in Catawba Co NC by two of his sons, Daniel S. and Allen M. Two documents in his estate file are the list of personal property sold and the final account.

The inventory of sale items tells something about George. He obviously could read, since he had two pair of glasses, and he liked to read, particularly his Bible. He had two Bibles as well as several other books. He was probably a devout Lutheran and most likely was a leader in his church.

George Peter Settlemire and Hannah Hawn had six children:

  1. Caroline Settlemire—born about 1835. She married 1st on 13 Jan 1857 Alfred N. Robinson, who was born 14 Jul 1824 and died 29 Mar 1874. He was the son of Henry Weidner Robinson and Mary Magdalena Wilfong. When Henry Robinson died in 1883, he devised all of Alfred’s estate that might come to him back to his daughter-in-law, Caroline. They must have lived in the Newton area, because the Catawba Co NC court minutes for Apr 1846, Jan 1864, and Apr 1864 show that Alfred served as a patroller in Capt. Herman’s Company. This is the area in which George Peter also lived. In Feb 1868 Alfred was appointed overseer of the road leading from Lincolnton to Morganton from the 14 mile post to the 17 mile post. Caroline married 2nd Robert Wilson Johnson, who was born in 1828 and died in 1911. They are buried in the Oakwood Cemetery, Hickory, Catawba Co NC. She must have died without children before Barbara Hawn’s death in 1905, since she was not included in that estate distribution.

  2. Angeline Settlemire

  3. Daniel Sylvanius Settlemire

  4. John P. Settlemire

  5. Allen Monroe Settlemire

  6. David A. Settlemire

George Peter Settlemire married 2nd on 27 Mar 1855 in Catawba Co NC Anna Bost, who was born 17 Dec 1819 and died 18 Oct 1895. They had three children:

  1. William Henry Settlemire
  2. George W. Settlemire—born about May 1857 and died in 1920. On 8 Dec 1915 in Catawba Co NC he married Mary Jennetta Cline, who was born about 1871 and died 11 Apr 1965. He was listed in the 1910 Crab Orchard Pct, Newton, Catawba Co NC and 1910 Newton, Catawba Co NC censuses. He was reported as age 43 in 1900 and 51 in 1910; both times he was single and farming.
  3. Alice Settlemire

Sixth Generation

Angeline Settlemire was born about 1837 to George Peter Settlemire and Hannah Hawn. She married 1st on 1 Jan 1862 in Catawba Co NC Jonathan Cline, who was born about 1839 and died 19 May 1864. Jonathan enlisted in Co. A. 12th NC Infantry on 1 Apr 1862 at age 23 as a volunteer. He was present in a number of battles until he was killed in the battle at Spotsylvania Court House. The 1870 Newton, Catawba Co NC census listed Angeline Cline, age 34 in the home of George and Anna Settlemyer.

Angeline married 2nd about 1866 J. E. Sigman. Her surname was listed as Sigman on 25 Jan 1900 when her father’s estate was distributed. In the 1880 census she was age 43 and married to J. E. Sigman, age 28 (should have been 38?) and they had a child Sidney, age 13, in the home. A Killian family history states that George (Peter) Settlemyer, son of Martin, was Sid Killian’s grandfather and that Sid’s mother was George’s daughter. The death certificate for Sidney L. Killian in Catawba Co NC lists his mother as Augusta Settlemyre. I have not been able to identify this child any other way than Sigman, however.

Angeline Settlemire had one child:

  1. Sidney Sigman—born about 1867.

Sixth Generation

Daniel Sylvanius Settlemire was born about Mar 1838 to George Peter Settlemire and Hannah Hawn. He married 1st Mary (surname unknown), who was born about 1838. The 1870 Granger Co TN census indicated that Daniel, age 32, was a house carpenter born in NC. His wife was also 32 and was born in TN, and they had one daughter, Minnie. Owen Peram, age 6, was living with them. I have not located Daniel in the 1880 census, but in 1900 he was in Lovelady Twp, Burke Co NC. At age 62 he was still a carpenter and he had been married to his second wife for two years. Polly was 58 and the mother of three children, all living. In 1910 he had moved to Icard Twp, Burke Co NC. He was 72 and Polly was 67.

The Catawba Co NC court minutes reveal that at the Apr 1861 term, Daniel Settlemire made application for a retail license at the forks of the Newton and Burke road, which was not granted. Such entries normally dealt with the selling of spirituous liquors, and we may assume that Daniel’s did as well. No reason was given for the denial.

Along with two of his brothers, a brother-in-law and his first cousin’s husband, he enlisted in Co. A. 12th NC Infantry on 27 Apr 1861 at Newton, NC. He was mustered into service at Raleigh, NC, Camp Lea, on 18 May 1861. He gave his occupation as carpenter and his age as 23. He was captured at Hanover Court House on 27 May 1862 and taken to Fort Columbus, New York Harbor. Then he was paroled and exchanged for prisoners at Aiken’s Landing, VA on 5 Aug 1862. Again on 12 May 1864 he was captured, this time near Spotsylvania Court House, one week before his brother-in-law Jonathan Cline was killed there. He was transferred to Elmira, NY on 10 Aug 1864, from which point he was paroled 15 May 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. He stated that he had volunteered to avoid conscription; that he was a carpenter and was willing to work for the U.S. government.

While he was in custody at Fort Monroe, VA, on his way to New York, a record was made of his general appearance. He was age 24, 5'11" with brown hair, grey eyes and fair complexion. Another account described him as 6’ with dark hair and blue eyes.

Daniel owned just enough land to live on, and that may indicate that he was busy as a carpenter so that he had no time for farming. He lived in Capt. Herman’s District, which was later referred to as the Newton District. In the 1862 and 1866 tax lists, he reported 3 acres of land, and in 1863 and 1864, he reported 4 acres. His father made the listing on his behalf in 1862 and 1863 while Daniel was at war.

Daniel and Mary Settlemire had two children:

  1. Minnie E. Settlemire—born about 1869; married (given name unknown) Ritchie.

  2. Lula A. Settlemire—married William Henry Echols.

Daniel Sylvanius Settlemire married 2nd on 6 Jul 1897 in Burke Co NC Polly Bailey Heartt, who was born about 1842 and died about 1924.

Sixth Generation

John P. Settlemire was born about 1839 to George Peter Settlemire and Hannah Hawn; he died in 1912. On 21 Nov 1865 in Catawba Co NC he married Margaret Roseann Reece, who was born about 1844. Just as most of his family did, John lived in the Newton area. The Oct 1865 Catawba Co NC court minutes show that he was a road hand on the road from Jonas Bost’s old field to Abs. Miller’s. The 1867 and 1868 Catawba Co NC tax lists place him in Herman’s District, where he listed 7 acres of land in 1868. At the time of the 1870 Newton, Catawba Co NC census, he and his family were living with Catherine Naugle, age 70. John, age 27. was a farm laborer. Rosannah was 24 and they had two children, Dovey, age 4 and Lawrence, age 1. By 1880 John had established his own farm in the Newton area. He was listed as age 40 and he was reported as having a heart palpitation. Wife M. R. was 36 and their children were D. E., 14; L. P., 11; S. J. L., 9; and M. D. A., 5. All their children except L. P. were girls. According to the Agricultural Schedule John farmed 11 acres, of which 4 acres were improved. He owned $25 worth of implements and machinery and $75 worth of livestock—1 mule and 22 poultry. He produced $50 worth of farm products, including 15 dozen eggs, 60 bushels of corn, 20 bushels of wheat, 21 bushels of cow peas and 10 bushels of Irish potatoes.

In 1900 John was in Crab Orchard Election Pct, Newton, Catawba Co NC. He was 60 years old and had been married for 34 years. Margaret R was 56 and had four children, with three living. In 1910 John was still farming and they had a grandson, John C. Hicks, age 17, living with them.

John enlisted 27 Apr 1861 in Co. A, 12th NC Infantry along with his brother Daniel and Eli P. R. Cline, husband of a first cousin. Like his brother Daniel, he was a carpenter. He has an extensive service record, some of which is confusing. One entry states that he deserted on 23 Aug 1863, and apparently he lost one month’s pay as a result. By early 1864 he was on sick furlough, and on 18 Apr 1864 he was discharged on the certification of a surgeon that he was disabled. He was captured at Fredericksburg, VA 3 May 1863 and was exchanged at City Point, VA for prisoners held by the Confederates on 10 May 1863.

There are two notations in his record that relate to a court martial. General Order No. 109-1, Department of Northern Virginia-Lee was dated 26 Dec 1863. He was home on sick furlough at that time. There is also a reference to General Order 109-8; neither reference provides any details.

John P. Settlemire and Margaret R. Reece had four children:

  1. Dovey E. Settlemire—born 2 Sep 1866 and died 9 Jan 1896. She is buried in the Unity Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lincoln Co NC.

  2. Lawrence P. Settlemire

  3. S. Jennie L. Settlemire—on 9 Aug 1894 in Gaston Co NC married Thomas Barker, who was born about 1873.

  4. Mary D. A. Settlemire—born about 1875. She married (given name unknown) Hicks and they had a son, John C. Hicks.

Sixth Generation

Allen Monroe Settlemire was born 16 Jan 1845 to George Peter Settlemire and Hannah Hawn; he died 18 Dec 1917. He married 1st about 1866 Mary Jane Cline Sepaugh, who was born about 1844 and died in 1873 or 1874. At the Oct 1865 term of Catawba Co NC court, Allen was named a hand on the road from Jonas Bost’s old field to Abs. Miller’s. In 1868 he listed himself for poll tax in Herman’s District. In the 1870 Newton, Catawba Co NC census, Allen was age 25 and Jane was 26. Allen was farming and he had a daughter, Adaline, who was age 2. Mahala Hobbs, age 36, was a servant who lived with them. In 1880 his age was erroneously given as 45; he was working on a farm at that time. He had remarried and wife Sarah was age 25. Daughter Etta was now 12 and in addition, he had children Robt., 9; Laura, 7; and Willie, 1. In 1900 he was in Newton, Crab Orchard Election Pct. He was age 55, had been married 25 years, and was farming. Sarah A. E. was 46 and had seven children, of whom six were living. Still at home were Loied (Lloyd) A., 14; Grace P., 10; and Lela E., 7. The 1910 census gave his age as 65 and Sarah’s as 56. Seven of Sarah’s eight children were living. Allen was still farming along with the help of children Lila E., 16, and Clarence H., 9.

Allen enlisted in Co. A, 12th NC Infantry on 1 Jan 1864, for which he was due a $50 bounty. On 5 Oct 1864 he was admitted to the Receiving and Wayside Hospital or General Hospital No. 9. Richmond, VA, from which he was sent to Winder Hospital. He was returned to duty on 15 Nov 1864. Soon after he was charged $11.00 for a missing bayonet: it may well have been taken while he was in the hospital. There was no record of what he was receiving treatment for.

Allen Monroe Settlemire and Mary Jane Sepaugh had two children:

  1. Adaline Etta Settlemire—born about 1868.
  2. Robert Lee Settlemire—born 1 Mar 1873 and died 29 Aug 1892. On 23 Jun 1892 in Catawba Co NC he married Minnie A. Rader, who was born about 1873.

Allen Monroe Settlemire married 2nd on 7 Sep 1875 in Catawba Co NC Sarah Ann Elizabeth Propst, who was born about 1853 and died in 1939. She, at age 63, married on 21 May 1922 in Gaston Co NC M. H. Hewitt, age 60. In the 1900 Catawba Co NC census she indicated that she had seven children, of whom six were living. In 1910, there were eight children with seven alive. Allen Monroe Settlemire and Sarah Ann Elizabeth Propst had eight children:

  1. Laura Caroline Settlemire
  2. Wilhelmina A. Settlemire
  3. George W. Settlemire—born 17 Jan 1881 and died 29 Dec 1884.

Millers, according to the Oct 1865 Catawba Co NC court minutes. In the 1870 Newton, Catawba Co NC census he was living with his father-in-law, Absalom Miller. David was age 25 and farmed. Anna was 23 and they had no children. The 1880 census gave his age as 33; Sarah had died. His children were daughters M. E. S., 10, and M. A., 8, along with son J. L., 6. He owned an 11-acre farm, of which 4 acres were improved. His $20 worth of livestock consisted of one cow and 22 poultry, which produced 15 dozen eggs.
