See notes for grandson Edward, the American immigrant.
These (facts in Edward's [above] notes) are all the facts which are
obtainable about the Cobbs of Corfe Castle, except something is known
of one Nicholas Cobb of an older generation who died at Swanage in
1610. (Probably father of Morgan Cobb, who named his eldest son
Nicholas). And afterwards, a Nicholas Cobb who was Parish Clerk of the
Parish of Corfe Castle from 1635 to 1679, who was doubtless Morgan's
son Nicholas mentioned in Alice Cobb's will. Nicholas Cobb was a
descendant of Corfe Castle at the time of the Protestation Oath in
1641. It is interesting to note that the name of 'Nicholas Cobb 1602'
is incised in the stone of a doorway in the tower leading into the
belfry of St. Edward King and Martyr the Parish Church.
Unfortunately, the Parish Registers of St. Edward King and Martyr (the
Church to which Morgan and Alice Cobb were devoted, as appears in
their wills) were destroyed during the Civil Wars in 1644 by the
Parliamentary Army. The Castle itself was a stronghold of the
Royalists, and was owned together with the demesne by Sir John Banks,
Attorney General of Charles I who was necessarily away in attendance
on the King and his vagrant Court. Lady Banks, his wife, was
Chalelaine in Residence with a small garrison and held the Castle
against repeated attacks. In England her herioc story is well known.
During the seige in 1644, the Parliamentary troops mounted cannon on
the flat roof of the massive square tower of the Parish Church located
not more than 300 yards from the outer walls of the Castle, so that
they might fire down into its outer ward, and with quaint Puritan
humor milled the lead roof and pagon bikes for missiles and used the
Parish Registers as wadding for their guns, thus piously hurling the
Bimish instrument and records of this loyal old Parish at the Royalist
Lady Banks, doubtless feeling sadly gay in their careless process of
vandelism (sic). No doubt it was to them a thrilling jest comparable
only to the contemporary smashing of many priceless painted windows in
the Cathedrals, a pastime much indulged in by the brethern (sic), to
whom lineage was abhorrent, suggesting aristocracy and beauty. It
proved, however, a pleasantry scarcely appreciated by present
genealogists. There are consequently no vital statistics of the Parish
of Corfe Castle ante dating 1653.
Corfe Castle is situated in the County of Dorset, on the neck of a
promontory, known as the Isle of Purbeck, jutting southward into the
English Channel. Adjoining the Parish of Corfe Castle on the south
lies the Parish of Swanage, running to and along historic Swanage Bay.
The distance between the two villages in the respective parishes is
five miles. The inhabitants of Swanage were either seafarers or
employed as were those of Corfe Castle in the famous Purbeck quarries,
which have been worked for many centuries furnishing the lime stone or
marble from which many of England's finest and most beautiful
Cathedrals and Public Buildings have been built.
