Pierce County Obituary:"Funeral rites for Mrs. Carrie Belle Frey ,85, were held Wednesday at the Pierce Methodist Church, with the Rev. George Scwabauer officiating. She passed away early Sunday morning, January 5, 1958 (Note descrepancy in year of death bbb) in a Norfolk hospital where she was taken Friday morning following a stroke suffered at her home.
For nearly 30 years Mrs. Frey operated a rest home on West Main Street where she cared for the bodily ills of the sick and aged & instilled in them some of her own Christian courage and faith. State inspectors visiting the home often commented on the fine spirit which they could feel when they entered the door.
Not only did she care for others but her own family was never neglected as she raised 9 children; five of her own and four grandchildren, Donald and Odell Doose, children of Herman Doose, and Harvey & Ivan Frey, children of Ed Frey.
Music at the services was furnished by a mixed quartet who sang "The Old Rugged Cross", with Mrs. Mary Leamy accompanying at the organ. Burial took place at Fernwood Cemetery at Wayne with Ray Lambrecht, Archie Lederer, William Mayer, Dale Schultz, Harry Birch and John Frey of Central City as pallbearers.
Carrie Bell, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Pitzer, was born August 16, 1872 at Yutan, Nebraska, later moved with her family to Pender, Nebraska. She was married there on June 29, 1890 to Harvey E. Frey.
Five children were born to bless this union. They lived for a time in Pender and then Wakefield & in 1916 moved to Pierce county where they farmed south of Pierce. The first break in the family circle came on October 24, 1918, when their daughter Mrs. Herman (Effie) Doose died , leaving herhusband and two small children.
Two weeks later Harvey Frey died on November 17, 1918 and Mr. Doose and his children moved to the Frey farm, where the two families farmed together until 1927 when they bought a home on West Main where Mrs. Frey lived until her passing, and where Mr. Doose was a faithful son.
About two & a half years ago, Mrs. Frey was hospitalized for some time and under doctor's orders to give up her profession of caring for others, although she recovered sufficiently to do some of her work about a large home.
She is survived by three sons, Ivan, Los Alamitas, California; Ed, Vancouver, Washington; Lyle, Woodland Hills, California; one daughter Mrs. Louie (Fern) Kratochvil, El Cajon, California; 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Also one brother, Harvey Pitzer, Ericson, Nebraska." [S51]
