Joel YOUNG

ABT 1800 - 1841

Repository ID Number: I12857

Father: Joshua YOUNG
Mother: Nancy WALKER

Family 1 : Frances Anna LEMON
  1. + Anna C. YOUNG
  2.   Peter YOUNG
  3.   Mary Elizabeth YOUNG
  4.   Joshua YOUNG
  5.   Nancy YOUNG
  6.   Vina YOUNG

Notes

Joel Young was born about 1800 in Franklin County, Virginia and it was there that he married Frances Anna Lemon (daughter of Isaac & Vina (Richardson) Lemon) in 1821. A few years later the family moved to Tennessee where they stayed until the late 1830's when they again moved to the Republic of Texas. The trip was a hard one and it is said that they were attacked by Indians more than once, the last time being up on the Red Rivet where they lost all of their belongings. They finally reached Houston County and settled near Augusta.

Sometime in the year of 1841 Joel Young took two ox wagons and two faithful slaves and started to San Antonio for supplies The trip was made in late fall, the weather was bad and he took pneumonia on the return trip. He died and was buried somewhere near the Brazos River on the side of the Old Spanish Road - on one knows the exact spot. When the Negroes made their way back after more than a month's absence, they got within hearing distance of the house and gave the signal - the popping of whips. The wife and children tan to meet the wagons to have to be told by the old Negro man that "Mas Joel ain t comin' home no mo."The Youngs were Baptist and some of them attended the church at Liberty Hill. Some of their descendants are still residents of Houston County, including granddaughter, Maude (Young) Davis who remembers hearing the early family stories
