Father:
Hugh LONG Mother: Anna WALL |
Hugh Long came to Augusta, Houston County, Texas with his mother and younger brother, Simon about 1850. He was born ca. 1830 in Giles County, Tennessee, the son of Hugh and Anna (Wall ?) Long. The Longs were of Scotch-lrish descent and had come to Tennessee from Virginia, then moved on to Sumter County, Alabama for a few years, finally arriving in Harrison County, Republic of Texas. About 1852 he married Mary Elizabeth Young (daughter of Joel & Anna (Lemon) Young in Augusta.
When the Civil War started, Hugh joined Sibley's Expedition and went to New Mexico where he was later taken a prisoner of war. He died near Monroe, Louisiana in 1863 after being released from the prison as he was on his way home. His wife and children lived with his brother, John's wife and family while the men were fighting in the war. His mother also lived in the household and the women got along as best they could without their husbands. However, Hugh's wife, Mary Elizabeth, died while he was away. When John returned home, he raised Hugh's children along with his own.
The Long families have been among the leading citizens of Houston County, serving their communities actively in church, school and civic life.
