The Lovell family traces back to Normandy as early as 1060, and came to England beginning with the Norman Invasion of 1066 with King William I.
Robert Lovell, a Peer, is in Norman records as early as 1060 and he left Peerage heirs in England bearing names of Robert, William, John and James down to 1465 (The Complete Peerage, Vol. VII, p. 208). Certainly all the Lovells of Westmoreland used these names, and this apparently indicates a continuation of these ancestral names.
The first Robert Lovell came to Virginia prior to Nov 9, 1635 (Va. Land patents, Nugent abstracts), and a Robert Lovell with Patrick Norton patented 1000 acres of land Dec. 2, 1663 on Rappahanock River, a renewal of a Patent dated May 26, 1660.
Robert Lovell, the progenitor, or at least the earliest proven, of the Westmoreland Lovells, is first mentioned in existing records Nov 5, 1666 (Deeds, Patents, etc.,p. 329) when he and Elinor, his wife, deeded 150 acres land to Daniel Swillivant. He acknowledged the sale in Court but Elinor, his wife, acted throught her attorney, John Dinely, "it now being convenient for her to travel".
It may be the patentee of 1663 is the same Robert Lovell here mentioned, on July 7, 1670 William Pierce assigned a patent of 500 acres on the Potomac River to Robert Lovell, who repatented this land on Nov 25, 1670 evidently to insure a clearer title (Va. Land Patents). This patent adjoined John Washington on the North and Andrew Monroe to the South, as well as his original holdings. He died ante April 24, 1700, date his will probated by his son Robert Lovell, Jr. The Executor (Orders p. 70). Will Book for that year is among missing documents. Children, in part are listed. [S1]
