Research of Duane Cobb, via Jim White of Dunwoody, Ga. (q.v) from NEW
JERSEY- A HISTORY (no other info avail re: that book) citing D.W.
Hoyt: OLD FAMILIES OF SALISBURY, Vol. I, p. 190; Charles N. Sinnett:
ANCESTRY OF JOHN COBB, OF TAUNTON; Pierce: CONTRIBUTIONS;
BIOGRAPHICAL, GENEALOGICAL AND HISTORICAL, p. 143 -
Edward Cobb, the second, was born in Taunton, Mass., about 1661, and
died at the same place not earlier than 1733, as there is a record on
February 22 of that year of a deed to his son of fifteen acres of
land, 'in the northerly part of his homestead.' Taunton records show
he married, December 18, 1689, Sarah Hackett, daughter of William and
Sarah (Barnard) Hackett. She was born at Salisbury, Mass. on Feb. 8,
1667. Their children were: 1. Ebenezer, 1. Mary, who married Seth
Dean. After the death of Edward Cobb, his widow married (second)
Samuel Phipps. ...............
MARRIAGE: Taunton Vital Records - Cobb, Edward (Cob) and Sarah Hackit,
Dec. 18, 1689.* *Intention not recorded
No record in Taunton of birth or death nor any birth records of his
children. However there is just enough information in the published
records that there is a problem with the above info about his wife
being Sarah, daughter of William and Sarah (Barnard) Hackett of
Salisbury. First of all there was another Hackett family who lived
right in Taunton and they had a daughter Sarah born 13 Jul 1661. This
was the family whom Savage recorded as Jabez Hackett, of Lynn in 1644,
rem. to Taunton, there had a son John, b. 26 Dec. 1654; Jabesh, b. 12
Sep 1656; Mary, 9 Jan 1660; (Sarah); Samuel, 29 Jul 1664; and Hannah,
25 Jan 1667. There is also a record of the death of one 'Cobb, Sarah,
w(ife of) Edward, Aug. 13, 1726, a(ge) 66.' There is no marriage
recorded for a Sarah Cobb to Samuel Phipps. Rather there IS a marriage
of a Mary Cobb, widow, to a Samuel Phillips! The marriage record
reads: 'Cobb, Mary [T.P.R. Cob], wid., and Samuel Phillips [T.P.R.
Samuell Philips], May 15, 1676.* [Cobb, wid., and Samuell Phillipps,
P.C.R.]. *Intention not recorded' Now, that widow who m. Samuel
Phillips is very likely to have been the mother of this Edward, and
wife of first Edward, who died in 1675! The Sarah, daughter of Jabez
was of right age to have been the wife of this Edward, and since it
did not say she was a wid. of, but rather w(ife). of, I'm inclined to
think that Duane Cobb got the information about these two wives
confused; and assigned the incorrect parents to Sarah Haskett in
addition to that. Where he got the information that Sarah was the
daughter of the Salisbury man is not clear. I am going to assign the
daughter of Jabez Haskett to this Edward until I can further clarify
this, as the published vital records seem to back me up in my
thinking. [BP]
A GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND by
James Savage, Vol. I, pub. 1860, p. 413:
COBB, Edward, Taunton, br. perhaps of the preced.(which was Augustine

EDWARD....
Note: Apparently our Cobbs were non churched while living in Taunton
as there is very little about this family in the surviving vital
records of that town. The other family of Cobbs is quite visible
however and our family does not fit into that line as can be easily
seen. This marriage seems to be the only recorded event and some other
items mentioned above. This link (between Edward and his son Ebenezar)
is the weakest link in the chain of Cobb lineage. Other sources may
have been found in the above mentioned items listed from the New
Jersey history. Town histories are notorious for giving erroneous
information which gets accepted as the absolute truth until verified
against cold recorded facts.
Also some early Taunton records were destroyed by fire in 1838.
