Anne Long and her three sons, Hugh, ]ohn, and Simon Long came to Houston County in the late 1840's, shortly after the death of her husband, Hugh Long, in Harrison County.
They settled in Augusta and bought a farm, known since as the ''Old Long Place. "
John and Hugh both fought in the Civil War, John going East with Hood's Brigade and Hugh going to New Mexico with the Silbey Expedition.
Hugh Long was captured during the Battle of Glorietta Pass near Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was eventually involved in a prisoner exchange and set free to make his way home. He never returned to his family, however, because he became ill and died in West Monroe, Louisiana. .
John Long returned following the war and assumed the responsibility of, not only his own family, but also his brother's widow, Mary Elizabeth, and her three children, Sam, Dora, and Charles Hugh Long.
Charles Hugh Long was born in Augusta, Texas in 1859 and grew up during some of the most trying years in Texas' history. In 1884 he married Mary Elizabeth MacMillan who had moved to Augusta with her family in the early 1870's.
Charles Hugh and Mary Elizabeth Long had six sons, all of whom grew up in Augusta and retained their ties to the community throughout their lives.
