ROCKAWAY RECORDS OF MORRIS COUNTY NEW JERSEY FAMILIES by J. Percy

Crayon, pub. 1902, p. 278 -

John Cobb, Jr. b. 24 Nov 1750, baptized June 10, 1753, had a forge at

Troy Hills, and Franklin, was sheriff 1792, justice of the peace 1797,

married Ann Parrott Oct. 31, 1773, died Dec. 17, 1805, another record

says Dec. 7, 1806, buried at Parsippany. His wife was born Mar. 20,

1756, died May 17, 1805, buried at Parsippany.

THE COBBS IN TROY HILLS by Sarah DeHart Condit (q.v.) p. 6:

'Deacon John Cobb's son known as John Cobb Jr., was born Nov. 24,

1750. He was small in stature, but of large influence and interests in

the community. Books were the companions of his leisure hours, among

them particularly prized by his grand daughter, Miss Eliza Cobb, a

well thumbed Shakspeare (sic).

'A forge. The first notice that I could find of Troy forge is that

Apirl 26, 1758 `Joshua Leonard' sells to John Mitchell all one half of

Troy forge for 130 Ss and half the cole house and cole yard.' A store

across the road from his (whose?) house, the cellar of which remains

now. Sheriff of Morris Co., 1702, Justice of Peace, receiving his

appointment 1797.'

'It was but natural he should find pleasant company with his cousin

Hiram Smith and together they visited at the Parretts. There was a

house full of girls, and we may be sure the days were never dull.

Lucas Van Beberhout in his letters speaks of this family and the

pleasure they added to the life at Beverwyck.'

'To John Cobb, the day of days, came October 31, 1773 he was married

to Ann Parritt. Six years later, his cousin Hiram Smith wed her sister

Eleanor Parritt.'

'To John Cobb and Ann Parritt nine children came to bless the home,

but only three lived to man and woman estate, of the remaining six,

four died in infancy and two in early childhood.'

'Where they lived at first I do not know, but ten years afterwards,

July 2nd, 1783 `Ephraim Ball agreed to sell unto John Cobb, the farm

and tavern whereon he now lives consisting of between 19 and 20 acres

of land for the sum of 300 S'. The article was signed in the presence

of John Hayward, and Henry Howell. Surveyed by his cousin Lemuel B.

Cobb.'

'The house, put on this land, bought from Ephraim Ball wa sframed for

his brother-in-law Samuel Paritt, to be located where Mrs. Edgar Smith

now lives, but not suiting he sold it to John Cobb, this became his

residence and home.'

'At the parish meeting Sept. 17, 1804 when it was unaminously voted to

give Samuel Phelps call to settle as our minister John Cobb and Araham

(sic) Kitchell were appointed a committee to draft the call. This must

have been among John Cobb's last public acts as I turn to the old

record I read, `Our beloved father departed this life Dec.

17, 1805 Aged 55 years, 3 mos. & 2 days.

Mr. Phelps preached the funeral discourse, the notes of which I have.

He was carried to his grave on a bier. It was becoming unusual to use

it, but after bearing the body of John Cobb to the churchyard, its use

was entirely discontinued. The graves of his children are in the same

plot with his.'

'With the death of Eliza H. Cobb the name becomes extinct in Troy

Hills.' (she would have been daughter of John Jr's son Henry or John

Jr's granddaughter)

at Troy Hills and Franklin; was sheriff of Morris county, 1702;
