He graduated from Furman University and read law but was dissatisfied and studied medicine under his uncle, Hr. James Perry Harrison.
McClanahan joined Hampton's Legion in 1861 and served in the 2nd SC Calvary under Gen. M.C. Butler.
After the war he continued the study of medicine under Dr. Baylis Earle of Greenville, an eminent physician of his time and graduated in 1867 from South Carolina Medical College at Charleston. He practiced in Greenville until 1874 when he moved to Oconee County. He is listed in Cyclopedia of Eminent.....Men... [S14]
