He is the well known Methodist Minister that was sent by Bishop Asbury to the Mississippi Territory in 1799. He organized his first congregation in Washington, Adams Co., MS. The first included Randal Gibson, Edna Gibson Bullen, and Rachel Gibson. His first brick church in Washington was on the grounds of the Jefferson Academy and it served as headquarters of the Mississippi Territorial Government. He is considered the Father of Methodism in Mississippi.
He died a lingering illness just prior to his scheduled marriage at his brother, Nanthaniel's home near Warrenton. The grave was lost for many years, but refound and remains moved to the side yard of Crawford Street Methodist Church, Vicksburg, MS. A monument is there today.
His will lists his nephews, Nathaniel, Tobias and Jordan, his sister Rhody and his brother Stephen Gibson.
