Notes

Eldest son of John, he and Phoebe had five sons and four daughters. In

the book, 'In Lights and Shadows', by Cam Cavanaugh, page 146, he is

called John. Also, on page 109, is a map from 1853 showing JHS's

house. Alice Day Smith wrote that he was 8 in 1798 when the family

bought property of Jacob Arnold in Washington Valley, an that he was

an accomplished farmer using modern methods. Also was a member of an

artillery unit in the militia. Buried Evergreen Cemetery.
