Notes

There is a grave in the Jamestown Island Virginia cemetery there known as the divided grave. A large tree growing through the center of the grave. It was said that a superstitious man spread the report that the woman buried there had a crooked streak in her and the tree was a punishment sent on her. The woman buried in that grave was Sarah Harrison, one of the Harrisons of the ancestry of President Harrison. Sarah's father was Benjamin Harrison. Sarah it seems, was doubted by her lover so much so that when she told him she would marry him he was a little skeptical and so he exacted of her and secured this curious written promise: "This is to certify to all persons in the world that I, Sarah Harrison, daughter of Mr. Benjamin Harrison, do and am fully resolved and by these present do obligate myself (and cordially promise W. Roscow ELLIOTT never to marry or contract marriage with any man, during his life) only himself to confirm this promise. I, the above Sarah Harrison, do call the Almighty God to witness and so help me God."

This was duly recorded April 28, 1687. In spite of her promise and call upon the Almighty, two months after subscribing to that paper Sarah scrapped her promise and married Dr. James Blair, who becamae the founder of William and Mary College. It is this Sarah Harrison Blair whose tomb survives in the raised clutch of the Sycamore on Jamestown Island. [S23]

Notes

in 1860 Census-Greene Co. the Eatman family was listed prior to Thomas' family, and perhaps this is the same family we see referenced to Pollie-sister of Thomas

THOMAS HARRISON b. April 15, 1819 - d. March 15, 1910, son of William Harrison, brother of Atkin, William Henderson, Jethro, Pollie, Sallie, Bettie and Sue, was born in Edgecomb Co. (now Wilson Co.) North Carolina and moved to Greene Co. Alabama with his father at the tender age of four. He married Susan Agnes Paschal b. August 22, 1826, d. February 21, 1883 in Clinton, Alabama, on July 19,1841, and started to raise a family. By his wife, Susan Agnes Paschal he had eight children, six boys and two girls.

This family is recorded in the census of December1850, at Clinton, his occupation - farmer. Thomas and his family lived in the precinct of Clinton section 28, township 23, range 1E, according to Snedecors' map & directory 1855-56, and was a constable during this period, through the census of 1860, and into the Civil War.

After the War, The Harrisons moved to Mississippi where Thomas farmed for four years. In 1869 they came to Texas, reached Centerville, October 29th, and settled on the "old Hannah place" about three miles west of Centerville. Thomas farmed for a few more years, before moving to Henderson Co., Crockett, Texas, and from there to Anderson County, near Palestine Texas, where he once again served as the constable. Thomas buried his wife of 42 years in The East Hill section of the Palestine cemetery before returning to the Centerville area to live with his son Thomas Wildie Harrison. Thomas was granted a Confederate Veterans' pension from the State of Texas # 1012621, commencing October 5, 1899 - until his death March 15, 1910, aged 91 years. We are fortunate that a photo exists of he and many of the Harrison clan. Thomas is buried near his kinfolk in the Centerville Cemetery.

Medical: Private in B.Turnipseed's Co., 19th regiment, Local Defense. Enlisted 9/10/1864 Greene Co. Beats 14, 15, 16? Engineers' Corps. at Mobile, Alabama for one year? Pension #02621, Leon, Bk.1 Thomas was granted a Confederate Veterans' pension from the State of Texas # 1012621, commencing October 5, 1899 - until his death March 15, 1910, aged 91 years.

Medical: During the war between the States Thomas was exempt from Military service due to his occupation, however, the Clinton muster roll shows Thomas in B.Turnipseeds Co. 19th Regiment Local Defense as having enlisted September 10, 1864 in Greene Co. beats 14, 15, &16. at the age of 46. He also served the Confederacy in the engineering corps at Mobile Alabama. [S592]
