Notes

Stephen Decatur Harrison (c1816-10 May 1881) was probably born in present-day Montclair, where his grandfather Harrison lived. Stephen was probably named after Cpt. Stephen Decatur, the American naval hero who defeated the Barbary Coast pirates and was undefeated against the English navy during the War of 1812. In the 1830 census, a boy of the same age is listed living with grandfather Moses Harrison in West Bloomfield. Stephen was left $100 in his grandfather Harrison's will, signed 1845 and proved 1854.

Stephen married c1842 Martha Rosaline ?Holmes (c1824-24 Mar 1878). From 1850, when they appear in the federal census, they lived in Jersey City. Stephen was a merchant with $18,000 real estate living with Martha and children Thomas, Lawson H., and John W., as well as two Irish-born housekeepers. A few months after the census report, 7 September 1850, Stephen joined with Peter Bentley in owning 9.5 acres in the Bergen/Communipaw section of Jersey City. They bought another adjacent 20 acres on 1 March 1856. Possibly they purchased other land together. They both lived on this property, in large homes on one-acre properties. In October 1860, Stephen and his family were original members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Jersey City, which had emerged from Holy Trinity Church. Stephen served as one the original vestryman. In 1867, Stephen is listed in the New York City Directory as a New Jersey resident with a merchant business at 27 Water Street and as a refiner business at 68 Robinson Street. (Robinson Street was also where Melancthon Wickware had his store.) In 1868-69, Stephen served as the last mayor of Bergen and oversaw its merging with Jersey City.

Both Stephen and Martha Harrison died in Jersey City and were buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Newark. An 4 May 1887 inventory in Hudson County valued Stephen's estate at $10,829: Mortgage bonds of $4500, life insurance of $2500, produce and cotton exchange certificates of $3200; and $629 of home furnishings.
