The 1880 Census of Michigan state that Lucy Nichols was born in Onterio. Where her parents also from that province?
In the VERMONT HISTORICAL MAGAZINE, PAGE 654, date unknown, there is an article about Northfield concerning the formation of a church, THE FIRST CONGREGATIONAL. On May 27, 1822 two ministers signed the statement. One as Rev. AMMI NICHOLS. Noting this strange given name, could he be the brother of Lucy Nichols Bromley who married William Bromley? She named one of her sons AMI FULLER BROMLEY (our direct ancestor), who later became the grandfather of my grandfather, Henry Charles Fisher and his brother Edward AMI Fisher.
Perhaps Rev AMMI Nichols was the start of this strange name?
The article later speaks of Rev Nichols as being from Braintree. He preached as early as 1814. The article later states that the Free Congregationalist Church was organized about 1837 by Rev. Ammi Nichols of Braintree.
On Oct 1, 1869, it was stated that Rev. Ammi Nichols, aged 88 years, and Capt. Samuel Harwood, age 91 years, were the only survivors of the original settlers of Northfield.
An Isaac Nichols was mentioned at the first representative elected. He served in 1791, 92, 94, 98, 1800, 36.
There was a W. H. Nichols. He is listed as a collegiate. A. M. Nichols is a graduate of Hudson College in Ohio.
The first services, Congregational, were preached in the house of SAMSON NICHOLS in the year 1788, member were ISAAC NICHOLS, DORCAS NICHOLS. In Mary 1802 AMMI NICHOLS united with the church and was ordained as a pastor in 1807 and continued until March 23, 1847. Also mentioned were Samson Nichols, Abner Nichols, John S. Nichols.
Mrs. DORCAS NICHOLS was the mother of Rev. Nichols. She died in 1841 at the age of 104 years, 10 months and 20 days. Her century sermon was preached July 18, 1856 by Rev. Daniel Wild of Brookfield, at which time she retain her mental faculties to a remarkable degree.
Rev Ammi Nichols was born in Royalston, Mass, Aug. 10, 1781, the son of ISAAC & DORCAS SIBLEY NICHOLS, natives of of Sutton, MASS, the youngest of ten children.
Rev Nichols spent time teaching with STEPHEN FULLER of Vershire and studied theology with ASA BURTON. He was licensed to preach by the Orange Association on Jan. 9, 1805. He married EUNICE BILL of Chaplin, CT, on Oct 15, 1807.
His family comprised seven sons.
