In 1923, Leila went to work for Cole Brothers and Fox Wholesale Grocers as bookkeeper and office manager. It was a small company starting out and she set up all of the procedures that would help the company grow to a regional supplier of food products. In 1973 at the age of eighty years, after fifty years of service to that company, Miss Leila retired. The Methodist Church, particularly the Canton Methodist Church was her life. In honor of a lifetime of work with the children of that church, the Administrative Board presented to her family the following printed, framed memorial: RESOLUTION OF APPRECIATION AND REMEMBRANCE IN MEMORIAL OF LEILA HARRISON WHEREAS, the late Miss Leila Harrison served effectively and efficiently for many years on the Administrative Board of the Canton First United Methodist Church where she was a sincere advocate of the children of the Church; and WHEREAS, She was admired and appreciated by all who knew her, especially by the passing masses of children that went through the children's department which she headed and in which she taught (beginning at sixteen years of age) for many generations; and WHEREAS, She served in the various organizations of the Church, was loyal to the mission of the Church and her Lord and Master whom she loved. BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Administrative Board of the Canton First United Methodist Church, on the third of December, 1989, affirm this Resolution and express its gratitude to God and to her family for her many contributions to the ministry of this Church and the United Methodist Church; and FURTHER RESOLVED THAT a copy of this resolution be presented to the family, a copy of the resolution be placed with the minutes of the Administrative Board of the First United Methodist Church of Canton and printed in the Madison County Herald and the Mississippi United Methodist Advocate. Respectfully submitted on behalf of the Administrative Board of the First United Methodist Church, Canton, Mississippi. L. A. Penn, Jr. Chairman, R. Allen Winstead, Pastor, Edith Purviance, Secretary. In 1987, Miss Leila (she was known as "Auntie" by her family) was recognized by the Church for eighty (80) years of membership in that Methodist Church. She touched many lives over 96 years, especially the lives of her own family.
