Notes
A letter written in 1931 by a niece of Margaret Jane Harrison, Estelle Lindsay Claridge, describes the marriage in the following way.
"Uncle Alford was forbidden in their (Harrison) home. Aunt Jane was deeply in love with him. They managed to run away to get married. Grandpa followed them and brought her back. He kept tabs on her during the day, locked her in a room at night. Where locksmith fails, love prevails. One morning he unlocked the door and she was gone. She had removed some flooring, crawled under the house and run away and married. Grandpa could do nothing..."
