Notes

"William Henry Harrison was the oldest son of Jacob and Ardelia Look Harrison. He was only four years old when he made the journey back to Steuben County, New York to spend two years with his mother and grandparents while his father went west in the gold rush excitement. Upon returning to Iowa, he attended Subscription School (private school) with his brother and sisters, suggesting that his father had indeed 'struck it rich'. He remained on the family farm until his marriage March 30, 1880.

His bride was "Jennie" Berry and the marriage took place at her home in Bertram Township. She had been born "Eliza Jane" according to her birth certificate (a fact she never disclosed to her descendants) on April 11, 1861, the daughter of Robert Berry and his wife Nancy Thorrington.

William Henry rented a farm from his father for a couple of years after his marriage. He then purchased 48 acres of land in Bertram Township on which the family lived until 1885. They moved to Mt. Vernon where he engaged in the livery business for several years. In 1890, just after the Dakota Territory became the 39th and 40th states, William traded his Mt. Vernon property for 320 acres of land in the Dakotas and 29 acres of land in Bertram Township, Linn County. It was on the timberland that the family built their permanent home. In the mid-1890's they acquired Sections 27 and 28, also in Bertram Township. He made many valuable improvements to his home, with modern conveniences and built good barns for cattle and grain facilities and devoted considerable attention to the buying, breeding and selling of livestock. He filled numerous civic offices in the community including Township Trustee, School Treasurer and School Board Director. He was an active member of the Methodist Church, due to the influence of his wife who was a fourth generation Methodist in America.

William Henry and Jennie's years of retirement found them enjoying life in Long Beach, California, the beloved home of Will's father, Jacob. These Harrison men loved the orange groves and the warm, year-round sunshine of Southern California. William Henry died at his home in Long Beach on March 3, 1924 and is buried in Sunnyside Mausoleum, Long Beach.

Jennie lived until September 7, 1953. During her nearly thirty-three years of widowhood, she was a great influence on her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. This very special "Grandma Harrison" is buried beside her beloved "Will" at Sunnyside Mausoleum in Long Beach. [S583] [S583]
