This couple's names are recorded at the baptism of their grandson, Michael Hooter, 1791-1867. See Mississippi Historical Publication Vol 5, 1925. It discusses a visit to this couple's farm in Natchez.
See ARCHIVES GENERALES DE LOS INDIAS, SEVILLE PAPELES PROCEDENTES DE CUBA, LEGAJO 2358 and GENERAL CENSUS OF OPELOUSAS 4 MAY 1777 #128. All members of this family are mentioned.
Michael, the immigrant apparently arrived in PA from Germany, possibly via Maryland. He was persuaded to leave Redstone, PA indian lands in 1768. He and a large group of settlers probably left by flatboat down the Ohio River. We have a copy of his British Landgrant for Natchez land, dated 1769. The original document is in Mississippi Archives in Jackson.
Succession records lists all of his children.
From book NATCHEZ POST SCRIPTS, a M. HOOTER witnessed the Will of James Perry on 19 March 1782. The Perry land was near the original Hooter grant. Harold Fisher has corresponded with descendants of the Perrys.
The GENERAL CENSUS OF OPELOUSAS 4 May 1777, shows Michael Hooter was born 50 years before, or 1727, in Germany. His wife Mary Barbara Hooter was born in 1733. Their children are listed as Michael 18, Joseph 12, Phillip 10, Louis 6, Jacques 3, Marie 1 and Elizabeth 15.
IN PUBLICATIONS OF THE MISSISSIPPI HISTORICAL SOCIETY, VOL V, page 26, we find the DEPOSITION OF DANIEL HUEY. This Huey is of N. C. He says that sometime in the month of April, 1770, he was at a place called the Muskingham River, which runs into the Ohio and that he found there a considerable number of English Families, men, women and children, who told him that they came from Red Stone Creek in PA by the way of Ft. Pitt and were on their route to the Natchez on the Mississippi in the Province of West Florida where they proposed to make a settlement.
There were some 79 white persons and 18 negroes. They had tools, implements, seed, saw mills and grist mills. Huey saw the land at Natchez and was very much impressed with it.
In more Historical Society publications we found Vol. V, a narrative by Edward Mease on his travels thru the Province of West Florida during 1770 and 1771. On Feb. 23 he went to several of the settlers' houses near the fort. "They seem very industrious and healthy and their children are blooming and fresh-colored as any. Among the 64 inhabitants are: MICHAEL HOODER, his wife and five children & assistant. In the book HISTORY OF FAYETTE Co., PA by Ellis, he discusses the settlement of that part of PA by white settlers on land that belonged to the indians. The uproar occurred during May, 1768, near Redstone. The settlers were named, some fifty or more. Among the names were MICHAEL HOOTER, RICHARD HARRISON, LAWRENCE HARRISON. Apparently, the English government agreed to give the settlers land at Natchez provided they would vacate the Pa. indian lands.
The immigrant died about 1787 in the Rapides District of LA. The wife MARY BARBARA HOOTER, dau of father KEMBLE died about 1796. The Avoyelles Parish Archives of January 1, 1797 list the children as follows:
Michael Hooter Philip Hooter Mary Lacraud Joseph Hooter Elizabeth Young Louis Hooter Jacob Hooter
This couple sold their Natchez land on March 8, 1776 to Isaac Johnson. They next appear on the Census of St. Landry Parish, La on May 4, 1777.
In the book REPORT OF THE COMMISSION TO LOCATE THE SITE OF THE FRONTIER FORTS OF PA, two vols, second edition, Harrisburg, PA 1916, on pages 233-234 find "The12 day of Dec 1755 ...appeared...County of Northampton, Michael Hute (sic) aged about 21...(he goes on to depose about an Indian attack on someone's house....the document is signed JOHN MICHAEL HUTE." I feel that this was our relative and for the first time we see that his surname was JOHN MICHAEL.
Many of the date, and names, especially of the later one, come from references in the book THE LACROIXS FAMILY by E. W. McDonald
