ABSTRACTS OF EARLY EAST TEXAS NEWSPAPERS, 1839-1856 compiled by Linda Cheves Nicklas, Southern Historical Press Inc.:
"February 15, 1851, Obituary, Died of consumption on the 16th Oct. 1850,at the residence of Capt. Bundy, Van Zandt Co Texas, Rev Samuel Foster Donnell. The Subject of this notice early embraced religion, and attached himself to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, he was always a consistent and devoted Member. he was sent by the Lebanon Presbytery, as a Missionary to Texas, where he faithfully labored for five or six years, until his death. His daily conduct, said to all, "Here is the way, walk you in it". It was remarked by Mr Bundy that on the day of his death, he sang, and prayed, as well as he ever heard him, and said, "If this be death, it is nothing to die. Mark the perfect Man, Behold the upright; the end of that man is peace." Donnell died a Christian.
By resolution of the Synod of which Brother Donnell as a Member, in token of their high esteem. Jas. Sampson."
