Notes

Mary Gibson Harrison was christened June 2, 1753, Wenyaw, Prince Frederick, Williamsburg Dist. SC. Rev. J. B. Cain was the historian for the Mississippi Conference of Methodism. He had listed the original 7 or 8 first members of Tobias Gibson's Methodist Church, among them was a MARY HARRIS. I pointed out to Dr. Cain that Mary Gibson Harrison was a cousin of Rev. Tobias Gibson, and that I believed she was the one mentioned erroneously as Mary Harris.

He agreed with me. Rev. Gibson was sent from South Carolina, overland to the Mississippi Territory in 1799, and he founded the first Methodist Church at Washington, on the outskirts of Natchez. It is said that this was the first church of that denomination west of the mountains.

So far as I know there is no written evidence that MARY GIBSON was the wife of JOSEPH HARRISON. In Rev Jones' book A COMPLETE HISTORY OF METHODISM IN THE MISSISSIPPI CONFERENCE, he has the following to say about Michael Hooter: "Michael Hooter, as a Christian, was a character to be admired, loved and enjoyed. He had attractive qualities which brought him into notice whereever he appeared. Except in authontic documents and legal matters, he was never called Michael. His relatives, neighbors, and Church associates universally called him Mike Hooter. He was born on Red River either in Catahoula or Rapides Parish, LA on April 5, 1791, and grew to manhood in that locality. He received little education and moral training in his youth and understood little else than farm work and bear-hunting.

"He married Miss Cynthia Harrison, who was a near relative of the celebrated Methodist family of Gibsons of Adams Co., Miss. Sometime after his marriage he was attracted to the Pettit Gulf Hills, just east of Rodney, where he opened a farm in the primitive canbrake, and had a fair opportunity of following his favorite sport of bear-hunting....." (much more)
