Notes from a book by Opal Kern Schad owned by Norma & Charles Tracy:
" Charles & Emma Harrison Kern homesteaded in Hot Springs, South Dakota. Due to the drought and death of son, Herman from diptheria, they returned to Weston, Nebraska.
Charles Kern had a wagon shop there. They were living there in 1893."
*******************************
" William B. Harrison decided that he wanted to see the opening of the Cherokee outlet in Oklahoma Territory. He was 80 at the time. His daughter tried to discourage him, but to no avail. William B. and his son-in-law, Charles Kern made the trip from Weston to the Kansas/Oklahoma line. They traveled in a covered wagon and did their own cooking on the way. They arrived at the border several days before the run. They put the wagon & horses up at a livery stable and boarded a crowded train to Ponca City, Oklahoma where they watched the run.
In 1894, Charles Kern and family moved to Oklahoma. William B. Harrison stayed in Nebraska with his daughter, Clysta. Charles & Emma lived in Ponca City a few months & then moved to Tulsa, Indian Territory."
******************************
"Emma and daughter, Opal spent most of the summer of 1910 in Beemer, Nebraska. They were visiting Emma's brother Dick (Richard), who had lost his wife Liz. Emma was a practical nurse and the doctor told her that Dick would not live long due to his grieving. He died less than a month later."
******************************
" In 1912, they (Emma & Opal) went to Weston to visit Emma's sister Clysta. Emma showed Opal where her parent's, William B. Harrison & Emma Osborn Harrison were buried. William B. died in 1898 at age 85. From there, Emma & Opal went to Casper, Wyoming to visit Emma's brother Sam and family. The youngest daughter Gladys was the same age as her cousin Opal and her oldest sister Katherine had a son who was also their age. Sam's wife was Mayme. Their daughter May later married and moved with family near Pawhuska, Oklahoma."
* Opal was living and married in Wisconsin and then moved back to Tulsa in 1925 due to Emma's failing health.
