Notes

We are uncertain where the exact date of Joseph Harrison's birth came from.

Parents unk - arrived in Natchez, MS c. 1780. He and two HAYTON brothers got a large grant of land.

Harold C. Fisher notes: In both Adams Co., MS and Concordia Parish, LA, Joseph Harrison filed a document that mentioned his proposed marriage to Mrs. Perkins. In this document he named all of his children. He was apparently trying to preserve the children's inheritance. The document INTENT OF MARRIAGE TO PERKINS was dated July 1, 1815.

According to Mississippi Hist. Society the following land was granted on July 22, 1769: 1523 acres at Natchez to Joseph Harrison, George Harrison, John Hayton, Joseph Hayton

Howards BRITISH DEVELOPMENT OF WEST FLA" shows 2000 acres to the 4 men as of Aug. 16, 1768. A Thomas Harrison was granted 500 acres on Tensas River.

We are not certain that the above is our Joseph Harrison.

Joseph Harrison got 328 acres on St. Catherines Creek March 30, 1778. He purchased from Gibeon Gibson 165 acres on St. Catherines. Certified June 26, 1805. In another note which I cannot identify: "Harrison Family" Page 48, sons of David Harrison, R. W. Vet, Taylor, Joseph & Wm"

Book O, Yazoo County Land Deeds, Page 746, John C. Harrison and Sarah B. Harrison of New Orleans quit claim prop to Michael Hooter (slaves).

In Concordia Parish, Succession Paper lists the following heirs, 1823: Sarah Bradshaw, Jefferson Co., MS, wife of John Bradshaw. James G. Harrison, Jefferson Co., MS Rosanna Henderson, Rapides Parish, wife of Francis Harrison Nathaniel Harrison, Jefferson Co., MS Cynthia Hooter, Jefferson Co., MS, wife of Michael Hooter Nancy Karnahan, Parash of Natchitoches, wife of John Karnahan Polly Brannan, Adams Co., MS, wife of Samuel Brannan Elizaeth Perkins, Adams Co., MS, wife of Charles Perkins Letitia Harrison, Jefferson Co., MS. now Letitia Norris, wife of Thos L Norris Thomas Harrison, 10 Jefferson Co., MS.

Land in Concordia mentioned 980 acres subject to survey and adjoining 240 acres.

Adams County Book A, Page 541 shows Spanish Grant to Gideon Gibson, 165 acres east of Fort, bounded by Joseph Harrison, 10 March 1789. He later transferred the land to Harrison.

Same book, page 542, Harrison had 328 acres 5 miles n. e. of Natchez bounded by Gideon Gibson 13 Nov 1786.

Records in Jefferson County state that James G. Harrison says that Joseph Harrison died sometimes in 1823. This was apparently to settle his estate.

Mrs. Dorothy Hornbeak of Monroe, LA, in her DAR application states that JOSEPH HARRISON was a soldier of the American Revolution from S. C., and that he served in the Continental Line, The 3rd South Carolina Regiment headed by Colonel William Thompson for which service he received pay from 20 April 1777 to 1 Feb 1780. She states that his home, during his service, was at Craven Co., Camden Dist.

One record states that Joseph Harrison married Sarah Perkins on July 30, 1821.

(Norman Carnahan of Texas states that JOSEPH HARRISON may have been the son of Major & Commandant, later Captain of the British Loyalist Rangers, JOHN HARRISON. This would be a strange circumstance since a number of DAR members base their membership on the service of Joseph to the USA. It would not be rare that a father had one loyality and the son another.)

(Houston at TreSearch3@aol.com, theorizes also that Joseph is the son of John. He states that John's brother in law, DAVID DRENNAN supervised the establishment of John's new plantation in the St. John's River region below St. Augustine, FL in the mid 1780s.) [S770]
