Apparently the records of St Pauls Catholic Church, Mansura, LA, as recorded by Rev. Donald Hebert, give this man his full name, Jacob James or James Jacob Hooter.
James Hooter was in Hinds County in 1840. It mentions 7 males and 4 females. In 1850 James Hooter, 50 is living in Yazoo Co., planter and wife Nancy 39.
From METHODISM IN THE MISSISSIPPI CONFERENCE by Dr. Cain: James Hooter, On the 24th of November, 1862, there passed away at the home of his brother in Yazoo County an honored Methodist laymen, James Hooter by name. He was born on Red River in Louisiana about the beginning of the century, but early in life followed his well-known brother, Michael Hooter, to the Gulf Hills east of Rodney in Jefferson Co., Mississippi. Later he went to live in Yazoo County with his b rother, MIchael Hooter, and it was there that he passed away. The Hooters are layal and faithful members of the historic Mount Olivet Church.
Rev Jones' book A COMPLETE HISTORY OF METHODIST IN MISSISSIPPI mentions that "Our excellent Sister Renner of Natchez is a daughter of James Hooter."
