Vol. I, p. 1716
Group 307 [same as Group 115]
307L100 - MAJOR WILLIAM LEWIS of White Co., Tenn. - 115L101
Died Hickory Valley, White County, Tennessee.
Major William Lewis, from South Carolina, with four sons settled in White Co., Tenn. coming to Hickory Valley in 1798. Three of the four sons had made a trip from the old home in South Carolina on foot to the vacinity of Nashville. One night they camped at the head of Cane Creek where they found a lead mine...On returning to S.C. they received the grants for lands [but not the lead mine since they could not locate it on the return trip]. They took their younger brother & father back with them to White County. William Lewis [37L100] was a Rev. War soldier and said to have been with Washington at Valley Forge.
Sons William, Thomas, & Elijah served with Jackson at New Orleans - 1812 - Benjamin is said to have also, but there is no record of Benjaminin at New Orleans in the National Archives although he did serve with Gen. Jackson against the Creek Indians.
