Father:
George PATILLO Mother: Jane JOHNSTONE |
Meynard states: The Patillo family originated in Spain. Descendants moved over the border in to France, became Huguenots and went to Scotland after th Edict of Nantes was revoked in 1685. From there they migrated to Virginia. Rev. Patillo a noted Presbyterian minister, was sent to NC as a missionary and served as president of the NC Provincial Congress.
However, further research submitted tous by Sam Womack with references to http://www.pattillo.net/namehist.htm clarifies the above:
"The surname Pattillo emerged as a Scottish Clan or family in their territory at Fifeshire. In 1305, William Patilloch received a grant of lands from King Robert the Bruce called Gibliston, and at the same time Adam Patilloch held the lands at Freuchie in Fifeshire. These two branches of the clan flourished and most notable the name of Robert Pitilloch of Dundee, recruted his fellow Scots in 1423 for service in France. In 1452 he became a French citizen and was made "Lord of Sauveterre" for his gallant contribution to the French army. He was known as "the little king of Gascoigne". He became the Scottish Ambassador to the Courts of France and Spain. Meanwhile the name in Scotland gradually became Petillo, dropping the last consonants."
This province or whatever Gascoigne was, was on the French/Spanish Border or near-to. THEN, after the Edict was revoked, back across the channel to Scotland - Henry was at Guilford just before the battle, and may have been there during it - He took a letter written by his Son-in-law, Major Richard Harrison to his daughter - I have a transcript of that letter in my files somewhere..the letter was written just before the battle.
