Notes

William Harrison, Jr. was born about 1730 in Upper Freehold, Monmouth County, NJ. Like his father he returned to the Burlington County area to find his bride. At the Chesterfield Society of Friends, he and Alice Starkey declared their intention to marry on the third month, third day of 1753. The second declaration was made on the fourth month, fifth day of 1753; permission was granted on the fifth month, third day of the same year. They were married in July 1753. (see film 849562)

The Starkey Family first appeared in Burlington County in 1681, when on 8 May John Starkey purchased 100 acres of land on Crosswicks Creek (home of Richard Harrison). (NJ Colonial Documents, Revel's Bk of Surveys) The family had land holdings in Monmouth County according to (NJ Deeds, Liber E.) Mary Channelhouse, the wife of John Starkey of Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co. NJ inherited 500 acres of land in Philadelphia Co., PA from the Thomas Potter estate. Another deed record (NJ Liber B, pt 2) shows that on 27 May 1701, John Starkey, husbandman and wife Mary of Burlington Co., NJ purchased from Anne Bull, a widow, 150 acres of land in Burlington Co., NJ. Their children, John, David and James are named in the document.

The above James Starkey married Ruth Harrison, daughter of Richard and Ruth Buckman Harrison on 4 September 1714. Ruth's brother, Peter married Sarah Starkey, sister of James on 12 November 1723. The Starkey and Harrison families attended many Quaker weddings over the years, as their children fell in love and were married, or were "victims" of marriages arranged for them.

William and Alice Starkey Harrison were adventurers at heart. They journeyed up to Morris and Bergen Counties, near the New York border; intrigued by the stories told by William's brother John and his Uncle John. They wanted to live in the wooded area with beautiful scenery and at the same time avoid serving in the military as they were still trying to be good Quakers. More than two hundred years after establishing a home in this wilderness, the area is still wooded, isolated and enjoyed as a recreational resort. The writer and her daughter Mariruth, visited this very special place (West Milford, Passaic Co. NJ) in 1979. William and Alice owned land in the area as they appear on the tax rolls as late as 1781. Their children included Thomas, John and Ann.

In the 1793 census of New Jersey to determine eligibility for military service, Thomas was a resident of Morris County and his brother John, a resident of neighboring Bergen County. In 1837 Bergen County adopted its present name, Passaic County. [S583]
