Dick O'Brien was born Atlee Stoneall O'Brien on June 9, 1894. He later changed his name to Richard Atlee O'Brien. He was raised in Maplewood, New Jersey, and attended the Newark Academy. He attended college at Amhurst where he played intercollegate football. He left college to organize a group of 27 youths to form the Maplewood Expeditionary Force to aid the French in fighting off the Germans in the first world war. A photograph of this group is held by E.P. O'Brien Weisiger and is reproduced in this stack. When the US joined the war, he enlisted and became a Sergeant in an ammunition train and drove an ambulance. He was wounded in an accidental explosion, but recovered. After the war, he was offered free education by the French government. According to daughter, Pat, he would attend classes Monday morning and Friday afternoon, and spend the rest of the week traveling through France as the welcome guest of the French people. After he returned to the US, he was hired by the Mack Truck Company in Newark to handle their insurance. He married Etta Phillips on April 15, 1922. He later joined the insurance brokerage of R.C. Rathbone and Son in New York. In 1928 he bought a home at 92 Durand Rd in Maplewood which remained in the family until 1973. He had two daughters, Pat and Lee, to whom he was very devoted. He survived the stock market crash and subsequent depression in good shape, and remained very active in the civic life of Maplewood until his sudden death on July 12, 1948 at the age of 54 of a cerebral hemorrhage. Preferred diet high in animal fats. Developed irregular heartbeat following heart attack ~1 year before lethal stroke. Final event ? atherosclerotic heart disease and atrial fibrillation/flutter leading atrial thrombus with embolism to brain. Cannot exclude ruptured aneurysm due to untreated hypertension. Data from E.P. O'Brien Weisiger, recorded by R.A. Weisiger.
