The grandparents of the compiler, Harold C. Fisher, related all names and dates during summer of 1943. John Clunan, Sr was born in Galway, Ireland. We are uncertain when he came to the USA or who came with him. His wallet is among the keepsakes of H. Fisher, given by grandfather, James Clunan. He apparently met the Salter family in Lowndes Co., Al., or for a certainity in Neshoba Co., MS.
He was on Neshoba Tax Roll in 1852. He first bought land in Yazoo County on April 7, 1856. This place known as CLUNAN SPRINGS was located several miles south of Yazoo City. This land was later sold to his brother-in-law David Salter, about 1875, and John Clunan, Sr and family moved to Dover Area of Yazoo County to the land known as The Clunan Place.
The 1850 Neshoba Census shows: John Clunan, 35, Ireland Amanda 25, Alabama William 2, MS Alexander Henry, 22, Ireland (possibly a relative of the Clunans. The Clunans lived in Residence No. 76. Next door, Residence No. 75 were Amanda's family, W. W. Salter et al. Living with him was Joseph Henry 19, born in Ireland. He must have been some relative of the Clunans.
The 1860 Yazoo Census shows: John Clunan, 55, Ireland (note age difference, 1850 census) Mary Amanda, 38, MS (s/b AL) William Clunan, 12 MS Samuel Clunan, 10 MS Clementine, 8 MS Mary 6 MS John 3 MS
There was a THOMAS CLUNAN in Yazoo County in 1860. He filed him immigration papers in Yazoo. They lived next door to JOHN CLUNAN and apparently they were brothers. The 1860 Yazoo Census shows: Thomas Clunan, 30, Ireland Ann Clunan, 25, Ireland Barbara, 7 Bridget, 5 Mary, 2
We do not know what became of these people. My grandparents apparently were unaware of them.
A letter to Rev. James G. Brett, who was a priest at Yazoo City, received a letter from Israel F. Begley, at the Genealogical Office in Dublin, Ireland. Father inquired, per my request, about the CLUNANS/CLOONAN of Ireland. He said that the majority of these families were in County Galway, between the towns of Athenry and Kinvara.
