My Ancestor, James Craig Jr. left Blount Co. TN abt 1805 and came to Williamson Co. (now Maury Co. TN. He came to Limestone Co. AL in 1818 where he lived near his son David Hall Craig until 1823, he then moved to Carroll Co. TN where he died Sep 7, 1828.
The James Graig of Lincoln Co. TN is not this James Craig of Blount Co. TN. John Coffee Craig is the son of John of Lincoln Co. TN who later moved to Giles Co. TN abt 1830 where he died. John Coffee Craig moved to Tippah Co. MS where he died and his tombstone says he was born in SC.
James, Jr. was listed as being at the Battle of Kings Mountain with brothers John and David from Washington Co, Va, page 1385, Summers Hist of SW VA and in Over Mountain Men, page 120.
He received land grant # 1117 for 430 acres S Side of Nolichuckey River near Greeneville 7 Jun 1784, Greene Co. TN.
James Craig, Jr. Greene Co., TN in 1783, tax assessors list him as owning 200 acres and next line down was James Craig, Sr no land listed. Greene Co. Deed Book G pages 14 & 15 James Craig, Jr. of Blount, TN. sold 218 acres of land to John Horton on south side of Nolichucky River on Cedar Creek Oct 25 1796. So he had already moved bef 1796 to Blount Co. TN.
1800 Blount Co, TN tax rolls listed James Craig, Sr, James Craig, Jr. David and John Craig. In 1802 Blount Co Crt rec states " on motion of call David Craig was administrator of James Craigs estate." then James, Sr died in Blt Co in 1802. His name was not on the 1803 tax list. There was no will or inventory listed.
From an article publ by the Athens Post, Mar 7 1867, reprinted Dec 17, 1942:
Athens Post, Limestone Co. AL, Mar 7, 1867, reprinted Dec 17, 1942:
"James, Jr. went down the Tenn River from Blount Co, TN to now Athens, AL with his sons in 1800 to find new land, and returned to TN because of hostile indians. In 1802 there were no white citizens in the county, occupied mainly by chickasaw with a light sprinkle of choctaws, cherokees and creeks.
In 1803 immigrants began to pour into the northern portion of the MS Terr from VA, TN and NC. Most came by way of Knoxville, down the TN river in flat boats, to the head of Muscle Shoals".
James Craig , Jr went back to Blount Co was on the 1801-02 tax list in Captain Scott's Co. Again in1803 he attempted, but soldiers had been sent to keep settlers off Indian lands. His wife Susan was on the 1800 Tax List in Blount Co. TN.
About 1805 he moved to Williamson, now maury, Co. TN settling in the Fountain Creek areas with the David COPELAND family. David Copeland had married Susannah Craig on 25 Jun 1800 in blount co. with James Craig as Security.
James Craig, Jr. died in Carroll Co. TN, 7th Sep 1828. Ann Craig filed his nuncupative will on 8 Dec 1828. No children were named in the will, but it stated that there were eleven heirs (not named). From court records, land deeds, wills, probate and Bible records it has been determined that he had at least five sons. [S234] [S234]

HISTORY OF MEDFIELD (Mass) by Wm. S. Tilden states that Lydia was the
sister of the 'Apostle ' Eliot. She was the widow of James Penniman.
She and her daughter Lydia Adams (wife of Edward) both died the year
of King Philip's war when Medfield was attacked by the Indians.
THE GENES OF ABRAHAM PARKER by Tom Lawless (1990)
Marriage date and location posted on Prodigy Service by George Cabana
Jr. on 6/14/93, not verified by me. (see below)
Cabana also posted the children as follows: Sarah (d.y.) James Lydia
Joseph Bethiah Hannah Abigail Mary Samuel (d.y.) and Sarah again.
Thomas Hamm, archivist and asst. prof, Earlham College, Richmond,
Indiana gives her place of birth as Widford, Essex, Eng. (his
ancestor).
Another unidentified page but probably again NEHGR July 1953, p. 236
'Notes'
Marriage Record of James Penniman and Lydia Eliot: - It has long been
known that Lydia, the wife of James Penniman, of Braintree, was the
daughter of Bennet Eliot of Widford and Nazing, co. Essec, England,
who in his will names a daughter Lydia (see Waters Gleanings, pp.
904-5). From her will and that of her second husband, Thomas Wight, of
Medfield she is shown to be the sister of John Eliot (the Indian
Apostle), but the date of marriage ahs not been known apparently. From
the copy of the Boyd Marriage Index in Salt Lake City, I learned of
the marriage in 1631 of James Pemiman [sic] and Lydia - in the parish
of High Laver, co. Essex. Upon sending to England for a copy of the
record the vicar has given me a copy of the entry in the parish record
as follows:
1631 James Penieman and Lydia his wife were married 26th July 1631.
Unfortunately her surname was omitted in the record but as High Laver
is not far from Nazing the identity seems unquestionable.
According to Savage they probably came in the Lyon in November 1631 to
Boston where they were admiteed to the church at the same time as John
and Jacob Eliot (her brothers) whom she evidently accompanied here.
