"After the Willing

~~~~~~~
BARHAMVILLE CEMETERY (Columbia, S. C.; off Harrison Road, near Two Notch.)
Excerpts from Nell Waites Isaacs' letter to Joe W. Hughes. Jr.
Chester, S. C., Aug. 27, 1975,
"Our (sic) great grandmother Mary Harrison Hughes gave ? acre adjoining the cemetery to the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia for a chapel to be built and students from the seminary used to go out and hold services. This chapel was called Barhamville. I remember the chapel. It was very pretty. The pews were closed with a little swinging door. It had a steeple with a bell, a very impressive pulpit and an organ, my mother was organist there...... Thank God, Guy Waites raised enough money to get a fence around the few markers left" ( in the cemetery ).
"Now, Barhamville School was an elite school for girls. My grandmother (Emma Narcissa Hughes Waites ) attended this school and the land for this school was given by Mary Harrison's father and our (sic) great great grandfather, Benjamin H. Harrison, who was a planter and owned a very large acreage of land according to my mother."
"They ( Edward Isaac Hughes and wife Emma ) are buried to the right of my grandparents."
