Joel is 16 on the 1850 Shelby Co., TN census and he is again the only child. After Joel marries and has his own family (he was a dentist in Mississippi) he suffered an untimely death when bitten by a water moccasin. His father James (Fanny dead at this point) moved to MS to rear Joel C.'s children. He remarried the young widow of a relative.
