John and Sally had 8 children. In August 1798 they purchased three
tracts of 141 acres from Jacob Arnold Homestead Farm in Washington
Valley, NJ. They came to the Valley in 1788 from Caldwell.
('Washington Valley: An Informal History', by Barbara Hoskins,
Caroline Foster, Dorothea Roberts, and Gladys Foster, publ. Edwards
Bros. Inc., Ann Arbor, Mich.) Alice Day Smith writes in 'Story of an
Old Home and 1812 House' that John Smith was her G,GF. John is listed
in the 1966 DAR Patriot Index, pg. 627, as a wagoneer in the army.
Apparently at age 14 he spent 20 days doing this for the N.J. militia
(also according to Sarah Gould Smith Stickney, his granddaughter.)
Buried Evergreen Cemetery.
