Capt. Buford turned his General Merchandise business over to his son, John C. Buford, and two sons-in-law, I. H. Harrison, and Will Thomas in the latter part of 1866. Their store known as Buford, Harrison, & Thomas occupied the lot west of the present fire station. In later years, the partnership was dissolved, he clerked in the J. H. Tapp Grocery. Elected several times to city and county offices, he was appointed Postmaster and served from 1887-1890. During that time the Post Office was in the building East of the present Carnation Theatre. For years he was a local agent for the Dallas News, and a familiar figure around the square where he was affectionately called "Uncle Hubby".
He never forgot the cause of the confedereacy. Though a cousin of Pres. Benj. Harrison, he dissolved all family ties after the Ohio Harrisons joined the Union army. In the manner of Southern gentlewomen, his wife always called him Mr. Harrison, both enjoyed the radio and especially musical programs. If the band swung into "Dixie" during a program, he would rise and stand at solemn attention. after which he would jump up and give the old rebel yell. Mrs. Harrison enjoyed these moments. He was a lifelong student of Greek and Latin, he had an unusual journalistic ability.
