Elijah Lindsey Fulton stated that when David Lindsey's est was settled it was divided between Mary, the widow, and twelve children or their heirs. The daughter, Hulda, who married Richard Crowson, and Thomas and Elijah were deceased. Mr. Fulton said his aunt, Mrs. Crowson had died before 1814; His uncle James Lindsay lived in Coosa Co.; His aunt Mary Smith had also lived in Coosa Co. Final settlement, son John adm. $5,889.43 left to his heirs.
The Story of Coal and Iron in AL, p. 23 gives this account: Major Jonathan Mahan followed the Indian trail home from a battle in the War of 1812 among his troops were James and Edward Mahan, Lindseys, Fanchers, Massengales, Ragans, and Smiths. When they reached a confluence of three creeks, Mahan, shoal and Mayberry, 12 of the company remained; 6
with a few Indian Traders continued to the Cumberland Valley for their wives and children, returning with a small gathering of friends, they founded on the fertile site of the little Indian Village, the settlement later known as Briarfield. They lived first in wigwams and later uilt log houses. "There was a forge, later known as Thompson's Mill, 2 miles west of Montevallo in the edge of Shelby Co on Shoal Creek. It appears Mr. Lindsay built or owned the forge."
"These Lindsays moved around in Madison, Shelby, Bibb, Coosa, and Talladega. They took a prominent part in the enterprises in their area. They were people of religious belief. There is no spot on their character down to the third and fourth generations.
The epitaph on David Lindsays tombstone reads:
"Foremost in Hospitality, Sincere in Friendship, Kind, Bevenolent and Just. The lamp of Truth lit up the dark valley of the shadow of death."
The AL DAR found 3 other David Lindseys; one was too old for the revolution supposed to be buried in Columbiana with his wife; one from PA who lived and died there; and one in NC lived and died there. [S487]
