!Alfred enlisted in the Civil war from Monroe Co.,Tn, 9/20/1863. He served under Capt. Thos McDermott in the 11th and 9th Tn. Calavery. He was a medic and had the nickname of Doc. He was discharged 9/11/1865. Alfred purchased a farm near Gumlog Ga. They also ran a general store which was located near their home. Alfred helped build the road over the Smokies and then supervised the highway. The older boys worked in the copper mines some of the time. After Alfred's death Martha continued running the store, until 1902, when they moved to Dripping Springs, Tx. Martha is buried in the Spring Creek Cemetery North of Gracemont, Ok. Alfred is buried in the Old Brasstown Baptist Church cemetery near Young Harris, Ga. Alfred died of a Heart Attack after chopping wood. His Doctor J. C. Nichols.
