Richard Koontz writes "Colonel John arrived in Rockingham County in 1794. He served in the legislature (1797-98), became paralyzed around 1820, served again in 1822-23. He bought a farm around Big Spring (now Lacey Springs) 7 May 1810, purchased from Josiah Harrison and Margaret his wife. This is the same house that later housed the Lincolns prior to their departure to points west. Today a memorial marks it as the Lincoln Inn.
"He had a tan-yard, operated by Isaac Hite. Isaac married Polly Koontz, daughter of Colonel John, and brother of Jacob Koontz, son of Colonel John Will probated August 1830, Rockingham Co. VA lists the following children: 1) Horatio, 2) Shrader, 3) Elizabeth, 4)Mary "Polly", 5)John 6) George, 7) Corkey, 8)Jacob & 9) Jane.
"John's daughter Elizabeth m. Benjamin Peachy Harrison 4 Apr 1809 RCV
"Until recently, there was no evidence that indicated who Colonel John's father might be. However, Marie Koontz Arrington located the relationship in the Rockingham County Courthouse, in the Almshouse Records. Colonel John's son was Jacob Koontz. "Men Of Mark and Representative Citizens of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County", in which the author guessed it might be the Reverend John Koontz.
"Which makes the following data make more sense: John Koontz was named the administrator of Jacob Koontz's estate 19 September 1815. December 19 1815 he was named the guardian of Maria Graham Koontz, who later recorded the family relationships that document Colonel John and his daughter Elizabeth.
"An interesting note, for what it's worth, about the Lincoln family. John Koontz and Margaret Graham were the original guardians for Maria Graham Koontz. The bond was enormous for the time: 12,000 pounds! A year later, 19 NOV 1816, John Koontz and Margaret Graham were joined by John Morris. What I don't fully understand is this: a decade later, October 2, 1826, John Morris renewed his guardianship role, with Abraham Lincoln as bondsman."
His will was written 25 Jan 1826. He sold by deed to David Lincoln Sept 15, 1829. His will was probated in Rockingham county Court Aug 1830. [S759]
