"JNO. W. HARRISON,
son of Judge Harrison, is a native of this county, and was born February 28, 1838. He spent his youth on his father's farm, receiving a liberal education. When about twenty years of age he spent four or five years traveling over Colorado, Montana and many other western states and territories in search of the shining metal. In 1860 he returned to his old home and engaged in farming, which he followed for four years, after which he conducted a livery stable until May 1880, when he sold out. Mr. H. married in 1860 Miss Eliza C. Ovens, of this county, and native of Tennessee. They have had four children, two of whom are dead. Mr. Harrison is a plain, unassuming gentleman.
From Mrs. Emma Zepha Schryack: He began work driving ox-teams across the plains for Russell Majors, Daniel White, and Mr. Wadell. He recalled a blinding snow storm which occurred May 3, 1846, the day the train started from Old Westport, MO for Fort Union, NM. At the time of the Mountain Meadow Massacre, his train was within 40 miles of it.
During the Civil War he lived in Leavenworth Co. KS. After the war he returned to Johnson Co. MO where he opened a liverly stable.
John has a Seth Thomas Clock that was purchased before 1846 by his father. He also has an embroidered counterpane made by his mother in 1818, when she was 15 yers old. The cotton was raised, picked, spun and woven by her. [S442]
