From 1840-45, Edwin clerked for Benjamin Taylor, a NYC grocer. In 1848, he began his own commission business; later his two brothers joined this business. He moved around that time to Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Although in 1866 and purchased 50 acres in Montclair, adjacent to his father's, from the Egbertsons, the 1880 census reports birth places for children in New York, 1862-70. In 1870, he purchased a lot at Clairmont and Mountain Avenues, where he built a home. The 1880 census reports him in Montclair, with Fannie, 40, born MO; Florence M., 18, born NY; Carrie V., 14, born NY; Kate E., 12, born NY; E. Mortimer, 10, born NY; and Harold, 7, born NJ. Edwin also served as Montclair Road Commissioner.
