One family story (from Philip Henry Harrison) relates that Lula Devere Martin was accidentally killed when a bullet was swept into the fireplace. Her sister, May Porter, said she died of typhoid.
The following letter was found in the Porter family Bible; it was written by Lula Martin to Minnie May Martin Porter, her sister, about one month prior to her (Lula's) untimely death.
Nov. 22, 1907
Dear Sister,
I received your letter was indeed proud to hear from you. Glad to know all was getting along alright but sorry to hear Ma was not well. Hope she is alright by the time this leaves us.
We live in a four room house at 1906 Taylor St. Would be glad for you all to come to see us at any time you wish. We wrote to pa but have not received any answer. I guess we would have been down there before now but we did not hear from them. I don't know when we can come now as Bubber wants to go to work Monday; going to try and get in the shops.
I heard Bub was up but he did not think enough of me to come to see me. He was still out to Aunt Marys yesterday so I heard. I am married but I think just as much of all as I ever did. If they don't of me, glad you did not forget me. I am getting along fine. I got a letter from Bessie yesterday. Will write to her in a few days.
Glad you all have got a school teacher. Hope she is a good one. Tell Leroy and Ben to go to school and be good boys and learn all they can. Give Lula Mae and Thelma my love. Tell Johnie that we would be glad for him to meet us when we can get off. I close for this time as I have got to fix dinner and I want to get this off. Good bye with much love to all.
I am your devoted Sister
Lula Martin
You all come to see us. Hope this will find all well. You asked me who married us. We got married at Edgedwood parsonage preacher Peel married us.
Have photo of her grave marker.

Sad Death of Bride
Mrs. Lula Martin, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Martin of Blaney and wife of
Mr. Jesse A. Martin of 1826 Taylor Street, this city, died Sunday morning at the home of her husband after a brief illness. She was married only six weeks before her death, which makes it all the more sad. The interment took place Monday at Salem Methodist Church and the funeral services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Mr. Barnes. There was a large gathering of friends and relatives to pay their tribute of respect and the occasion was one of unusual sadness.
